When you saw them in 1992 you really had no idea what they were going to play. Pretty much every single show had totally different songs than the one before.

Actually, to find Jeff's hat-peak you have to go all the way back to Green River.EJ wrote:Jeff had much better hats back then.

Re: I Have Never Listened To The Avacado Album
No, you were right the first time--they weren't that great of a band to start with. They wrote generic alt-rock songs that differed little if at all from a million other bands vying for attention at the time, and Thom Yorke sounded like an obnoxious squealing mongrel in bad need of voice lessons. The only reason having seen them play at some house party in 1991 would be a remotely interesting story to tell is because six years later they started making game-changing albums and playing them live in amphitheaters, sure as hell not because there was something more interesting or exciting going on musically which faded away the more famous they became. I would imagine the number of people who think Radiohead peaked as a live band in 1991 is probably pretty small, regardless of how close they got to Thom Yorke in the basement of some frat party in 1991.cutuphalfdead wrote:Yeah, they were a very good band to start with, but they didn't achieve legendary status until the OK Computer through Amnesiac run.EJ wrote:No, they were quite good then. But, I'd agree they got better later.cutuphalfdead wrote:Radiohead wasn't even that special of a band the first five or six years of their career.Wishlist wrote:Yeah, go ask the people who saw them at the University Of Warwick back in '91.Lament wrote:Radiohead.
Sorry, son, you've got to do better than that.
The idea that it's a more powerful experience to see a band in a small venue where you get a more tangible sense of what is going on makes a lot of sense to me. The idea that the quality of an artist's performance varies inversely and consistently with size of the venue they're playing is nutty.

Rangi and Zeb think they kick it in 2014. Also, no YL yet.

Stevie Wonder was probably much better live when he was a thirteen year old doing Fingertips (Pt. 2) in 1963 than he was ten years into his career when he unleashed possibly the greatest run of records in the history of modern popular music (Music of My Mind/Talking Book/Innervisions/Fulfillingess' First Finale/Songs in the Key of Life).

Re: I Have Never Listened To The Avocado Album
Ladies and gentlemen, here's a person who thinks "variety" in a set list is what makes a great show. Yup, including songs from dog albums "Backspacer" and "Lightning Bolt" is really why Pearl Jam shows are the best they've ever been.Lament wrote:The variety in the setlists was much greater in 1992.
I, and everybody else, would take a set list of "Ten" in 1992 over a 2014 variety set list of "Backspacer" and "Lightning Bolt" tunes. Oh, and for more variety make sure they include those classic songs from the self-titled album and "Riot Act." That's what this fool wants. Variety.
Hey, you want many of the clunkers on "Lost Dogs," too, right? You want VARIETY!
"Variety." Hey, kid, you really don't think about anything you post, do you?
Variety. Making sure you play songs from every album even though those songs are worthless. This kid thinks that's what makes a hot live show.
Classic. Simply classic.

You won't find a great deal of support for your dislike of Riot Act and Lost Dogs here, friend.

Lost Dogs is the best album they have put out in the last decade. How can one not like it?harmless wrote:You won't find a great deal of support for your dislike of Riot Act and Lost Dogs here, friend.

so are you actually reading what i post or just trolling? i just gave examples of them closing w/ different songs this year and you completely avoided it.Wishlist wrote:That's not the only thing, it's just an example I gave you. And it is an apt example. Jeez, they've been closing their shows with that song for how many decades now? Man, even Springsteen doesn't close with "The Detroit Medley" anymore, but Pearl Jam is going to close their shows with....uhh, let me guess..."Yellow Ledbetter"!warehouse wrote:the only thing you could call "lazy" about their live show is their lack of creativity with the second encore.

Who said I dislike them? I was talking about playing the clunkers from a variety of albums. Are you going to tell me there aren't clunkers on those albums? Heck, even "Sgt. Pepper's" has its share of clunkers. Most albums do.harmless wrote:You won't find a great deal of support for your dislike of Riot Act and Lost Dogs here, friend.

Re: I Have Never Listened To The Avocado Album
I've mentioned this in some other thread, but I think it would be cool, to focus on a particular album for show. So like one gig, play like 7/8/9 songs from Vs. Another show, play 8 No Code songs, another play 7 Riot Act tunes, etc... This way all the albums get some good attention, and there is still plenty of rooms for hits and crowd favorites.theplatypus wrote:Ah yes, the only two possible options.Wishlist wrote:I, and everybody else, would take a set list of "Ten" in 1992 over a 2014 variety set list of "Backspacer" and "Lightning Bolt" tunes.
For those lucky to be there for No Code night (other than stip), you could get a setlist with: Who You Are, Hail Hail, Smile, Present Tense, In My Tree, Off He Goes, and Sometimes. All while still hearing staples like: Alive, Corduroy, Betterman, Even Flow, Yellow Ledbetter, and Given To Fly.
