Obviously I'm happy that he'll be still suspended when the 49ers play the Broncos. But when I looked at their schedule, I realized that it's not exactly fair to the Seahawks that they'll have to face Smith on both of their games. Aside from both SF/SEA matchups being late in the year and only three weeks apart (I really don't like this trend the NFL is doing with divisional games), what logistical problems would there be with randomizing which games a player is suspended for, instead of always making him sit out the first game(s) of the season?

Eli Manning did an AMA on Reddit today, and I thought it was going to be insufferable, but there were some good questions+answers:

A 4th and a move TE coming back for a guy that should probably be in the Pats ring of honor/HOF whatever they do.
Maybe we're just more used to it up here (although there was some bitching on local talk shows), but it's part of a long-term strategy that has netted pretty much an unprecedented run of success over the past decade or so. They assign a value to each player, plug in some complicated equation, and when it's time to put a bullet in the player's head, the Krafts coldly execute the move perhaps with more institutional fortitude than any other ownership in the NFL.

At some point, Brady will be cut or traded when he still has plenty left in the tank, and while people will be pissed, you simply can't argue with the success that the philosophy has netted. In fact, Brady and the Pats are poised for a pretty big pissing match, as he's slated to only make like $7 million next year and his agents want more...much more. Once Garoppolo (or someone else) is ready to go, Brady is gone, just like Montana to the Chiefs.

Part of the philosophy comes from Jerry Jones, who really taught Kraft a ton about making money (e.g. the Nike deal Jones struck) in the NFL. The Pats are now the second richest franchise (behind Dallas) and I firmly believe that Robert Kraft would like nothing more to become No. 1 on that list, unseating his mentor. That would be a remarkable turnaround for a team that during the early 90s had home games blacked out on TV.

Stephen Hill got cut by the Jets. One of a slew of offensive decisions that just didn't work out for them. They could have had Alshon too.

Ryan Mallett to the Texans. That makes good sense, there's a decent chance Mallett is better than any other QB on that roster.

For better or for worse, Jimmy G just basically got anointed.

Bill O'Brien coached Mallett. Makes sense to me. This trade has been rumored for awhile.

Oh yeah, didn't think about that, good point. I guess it's kind of depressing that Houston has turned from Denver South to New England South.

They should just direct snap to J.J. Watt on every single play and let him try to run over as many people as possible.

Belichick is a genius. Jimmy G has a much better chance at challenging Brady in the handsome stat, which is pretty motivational.
