I'm really liking this, MIYAGIKYO SINGLE MALT. Tropical fruits, spice, hints of smoke.

I bought these two for the house. One is very interesting, complex and drinkable. One sucks. A lot. I'll let you guys guess which is which.

Right you are. Tastes like someone threw a fistful of hop flowers directly into your glass and stirred it all up. Nothing blends together.

I'll probably end up mixing it with mineral water and orange juice until I finish the bottle.

What the hell is Texas Bourbon anyway? That doesn't make any sense.

While "Kentucky bourbon" is the standard issue marketing term, there's no rule put forth by any highly respected organization that says bourbon can't come from somewhere else.

I get it, and I agree that "Texas Whiskey" is just as marketable of a term, but here's the legal definition of bourbon. These distillers are just calling their product what it is. To be clear, Kentucky bourbon sits on my home shelf almost always. We sell a lot of Texas bourbon at my bar, though. It would be silly not to carry it.
Code: Select all
Produced in the United States
Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn
Aged in new, charred oak containers
Distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume)
Entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume)
Bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more (40% alcohol by volume)

Here's something just for fun regarding "Texas whiskey" and a look at why Kentucky bourbon is typically what I reach for at the store. Our staff is doing a tasting/education event with Rebecca Creek later this afternoon, actually. I'm looking forward to it.
