I may be wrong, of course. I'd just be surprised if they were quite that recent.

Looking at Self's Dream Band winning band, John Paul Jones is next.

This death seems a bit surreal to me. Bowie has been one of my favorite artists since I was a teenager. I consumed all of his albums when I was in high school. He was consistently excellent through just about his entire career, which isn't something most other prolific, sonically amorphous musicians can say.

I do think this death is a genuine shock, because 69 really isn't that old. He didn't die of old age - cancer took him. It wasn't a surprise when Maureen O'Hara died. It won't be a surprise when Kirk Douglas dies. This feels different. If it weren't for the illness, this guy probably could have hung around for another 10-20 years. And he was making music right to the last moment.

Listening to Blackstar for the first time, and I already think it ranks among his best work (granted, that's a long list, but still). Amazing that his final album after such an expansive body of work is still so eccentric, innovative, and challenging.

"Lazarus" was tough to handle.

It doesn't hurt that this album of intricate, spastic instrumentation also happens to be probably his best engineered record ever.

On a purely superficial note.....This guy really aged well. What a handsome older gentleman.

I thought so too. And the performances from the band are faultless.

It just occurred to me that among other things he had one of the best reputations as a decent human being in rock.

Lady friend of mine
19 hrs · Austin, TX ·
So I randomly met David Bowie about 11 years ago in a resort spa. He stopped me in the hallway, said he didn't know which direction the gym was located, and then casually asked if I thought it'd be possible to pump weights in tight leather pants comfortably.
I do love the wild ones. R.I.P. to a madly creative and fiery being who lit up hallways with that certain fantastically contagious, almost palpable aliveness bright enough to bask in. ❤

One of my best friends' fathers had a penthouse in the same building as Bowie in NYC (they are obviously very wealthy). They ran into him occasionally, and always commented that he seemed like such a gentleman.

His recent musical collaborators (The Next Day and Blackstar) also have great reps in pro music circles.
A known anecdote often told by Tina Turner is that he convinced the label to sign the record deal that resulted in her come back.

I shouldn't have ignored The Next Day when it came out. It's classic Bowie; he's a total old master on this record. "I'd rather be high / I'd rather be flyyyyyying" is such a beautifully odd bit of melody.

Other than the whole "having sex with minors" thing, yes. He seemed really cool.
