If someone were to gently admonish Obama (for the sake of argument) in a similar way to make a political point, I really think people would go fucking bananas.

Pence wasn't there in an official capacity and had family members with him, I think the focus on him was rude in the circumstances and the speech itself dopey and pious.
The focus on him as Veep-elect, at musical about our foundations, was rude? I guess he should have stayed home.

Totally disagree. Political figures place themselves "on the spot" by taking on the requirements of their jobs, one of which is functioning as a sounding board for the public.

You can't make a career out of persecuting homosexuals and then expect to sit in a room with them and not be called out.

Maybe he was there, as vice sith lord elect, to actually witness the downfall of society for himself. It's why he loved it so much.

Abraham Lincoln would like to have a word with him in the lobby.

We, sir, we are the proud defenders of American values, who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our jobs, our children, our religion, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”

Zero chance someone would have been ripped apart for saying this to Obama.

Also zero chance the message would have been that nonconfrontational and polite.

If I haven't been clear, I think it's the circumstance, not the content of what was said, that's objectionable - though I'm not a fan of the hyperbolic tone of the content either.

How hyperbolic is it when you literally advocate for electrocuting gay people until they choose to be straight instead?

I have my doubts birdsinhell has ever heard of Pence before all of this.

The circumstance is totally reasonable. At the end of a play, an actor in that play spoke from the stage. If some audience member had jumped on stage and started speaking to Mike Pence, that would be inappropriate. But Pence was in their house. They can say what they want there.

I just visited Snopes for the first time in a decade or more to see that - what a surprise - this isn't true.

How long do we have until Snopes is condemned as being part of the liberal media?

I think part of this probably figures into how you feel about the campaign Trump and Pence ran. If you think there was a substantial portion of the campaign that was vile and punched down, threatening the lives and livelihoods of many different segments of America that didn't fit into their vision, that demeaned Muslims, Mexicans, and the list goes on, I'd say that plea from the Hamilton actor to Pence seems more than reasonable. If you don't think any of those things, then I guess you don't think that, and therefore the commotion is much ado about nothing and the Hamilton speech was cheap.

He didn't have to say "electrocute them until they're straight." He does believe they need to be 'converted' back to straight though. Which is, to borrow your terms - both rude and pious.

Don't forget, he wants you thrown in jail if you even attempt to apply for a marriage license if you're gay.

Yet Trump is going to be the best friend the LGBT community has ever had. Fuck, just the election of these two makes me weep for where our country will be headed the next two years. Our social advances are going to be rewinded 60-70 years.

You mean, like, hypothetically if a congressman were to yell something like "You lie!" at a president during a speech to Congress? That would be super inappropriate, but luckily Obama has always been treated with respect.
