I haven't seen Wolf, but Jorge pretty much nailed my thoughts on/impressions of American Hustle.

The ending is scarier than any recent horror movie.

I'll see it someday. But I have to be honest, I think the movie looks like a pile of shit. I'm really not a fan of Jonah Hill. And I think Scorsese might be the single most overrated director of his time. Which is not to say that he hasn't made some fantastic films, he's just real hit/miss with me.

Also, I have a real aversion to unbridled excess and self-entitlement. If I can't enjoy Arrested Development, a show poking fun at those things, can I possibly enjoy Wolf of Wall Street?

I don't know. But I think I should see it one of these days.

Totally different guys, totally different styles, totally different aesthetics. Scorsese has a MUCH larger body of work. And, for my money, if we compare the films JJ has made with the films Martin has made within the same time frame, yeah, I'd rather watch those JJ Abrams films.

Sorry, friend. But I'm not dismissing either. AD is fun for what it is. I finally watched the whole and enjoyed a vast majority of it. I'm just not the superfan I wanted to be. But there's a lot of value there and I totally see why people love it.

Scorsese is an interesting, but uneven director. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Last Temptation of Christ are better than most movies made by most people. The man is capable of unadulterated brilliance. But I think he's made a handful of films that people rave about and revere, but I don't quite see their merit. He's interesting, but I think he's overrated by his fan base.

Goodfellas is definitely one of the films I was alluding to. And I'd say underwhelming is generous.

Also, not exactly sure how De Palma can be called overrated. Pretty much every film buff I know hates him.
