They hadn't begun anything. It was known Kurt was in a bad way so Stipe told him to come out to work on some material together; he didn't stick around long enough to take him up on the offer, however.

I remember seeing an interview with Stipe around the time of their Monster Tour and he said that they'd started collaborating......I think
