The interview wasn't about giving Pearl Jam fans an inside look or marketing Pearl Jam to the uninitiated masses (though that element was there at the end), it was about giving a dying man his dream. Sure, there was some milking the sentimentality of it for ratings, but really how many more people are they going to get to watch Sunday NFL Countdown? It was a good thing to do (by ESPN and Pearl Jam), it was touching and it was sentimental. Any negative reactions towards it says a lot more about that person than it does the piece.

It was very american lol, if you've ever seen any other American news reports/ specials whatever, same deal. Most of the sentimentality was Sirens fault The interview itself was nice, was suprising hearing ed talk about his dad and tear up a little.

There's probably more of Gleason asking about the album and stuff that we'll see later, but this was his special so it was about what the music meant to him.

It wasn't all about "giving a dying man his dream" though, was it? Because as well as "a dying man", this guy was a professional football player, and is interviewing Pearl Jam in that capacity. He's not just a fan, and he's not just "living his dream" by having the privilege. Did they focus on this man's achievements and status as a professional sportsman, or was it just a tear-jerker for ratings? This man has a degenerative condition which could very easily shorten his life, but hell, so do I. I would hope that any TV documentary will focus on my achievements in this life, and not manipulate viewers into prematurely mourning me, while I'm still alive and have plans for further achievements as a disabled person.

From what I could tell in the EPK, the band's attitude towards him as a person was great. I found Ed's expression as he talked very respectful.

It was about the fact that a young, healthy man is dying rapidly and this band has helped him cope and given him inspiration to leave a legacy for his child.

Jesus Christ, man. Sorry for offending you with my opinion. But this... the bolded bit... is a very common disability narrative. It's great for ratings. If you care for how disabled people are often portrayed by the media, look up the term "inspiration porn".

If you are familiar with that segment on NFL Countdown, you'd know that this fits based on past stories.

I just don't think I'm in the best place for it, to tell you the truth. But ironically, it's because I care about how this Steve Gleason guy is portrayed. I want him to be given proper respect for all the right reasons.

The problem here is that this was not a 'documentary' focusing on Steve's life. It was a small piece about him, his condition and his favorite band's role in him coping. That's it. If he had no problem with it, why would you? You are projecting in a huge way.
