That's usually ok. If you're not comfortable you could wash the deck with Simple Green and a stiff brush and wash it again.
What type of stain are you using? If you're using solid stain you could add this stuff called M-1. It'll make the stain more resistant to mildew or mold in the future (it may work with semi-transparents as well, but I've never tried it)
I'd go to the Home Depot. I recently used their Deckover and really liked it. Make sure you grab a decent brush, thick roller nap and a mini-roller (if you're doing spindles)
Don't cheap out on the gear too much, it makes a big difference.
Make sure it's fully dry before you start - moisture under the stain will really fuck you.
But how do you make sure the colors match? Seems more expensive and inconvenient to have to buy two cans of painttommy wrote:One more thing, when we do decks we typically use paint for The spindles and sides of the deck - basically anything but the surface.
Paint is just easier to work with and cheaper. Deck stain tends to be either too thick or too runny.
