Well there's already a couple douches in the pit saying it's the worst thing they've ever done. I figure it's gonna be a one of those "polarizing" songs once the intital glee wears off. Expect a lot more of these douches coming out of the woodwork once the album comes out and they see a Matt Cameron writing credit.
Haha. Mind Your Manners is a clear middle of the road song. Having said that I enjoy it a lot but anyone saying its the best or worst song they have done is kidding themselves.

The McCready is God shit over there is out of control.

I wouldn't say it's the best thing they've ever done, but it's certainly the best SINGLE they've released in a long, long time.

And I do prefer it songwriting and arrangement-wise to most of the songs it's being compared to (SBTC, Ole, Comatose, etc...). I think it's one of their best attempts at this kind of style.

But overall? I wouldn't say it's middle of the road. I'd say it's halfway into the ditch, which as Shakey once said, is where things are more interesting.

Alright, guys, here it is. My review of "Mind Your Manners", for those who were asking about it.

It takes the song as a starting point for a longer analysis of the band's career as a whole. It doesn't look like many of you will agree with me. :)

Really well written Jorge :nice:

I agree with a lot of what you wrote also (particularly the love for No Code and the 'middle era'). I'm also not kidding myself that they'll ever touch what they did creatively in that period.

While I do take a guilty pleasure in some of the new wavey/poppy moments of the last couple of albums, I am hopeful that the band can at least deliver something more interesting this time around, and I don't think a fast-paced lead single necessarily shines much light on what to expect from the album as a whole just yet.

I think you're way offbase about this song. To me, it is a well-written song, free of the sheer banality of most of the songs on their last 2 albums.

Well I'll put my hand up as one of the douches right now. This truly is one of the worst album tracks PJ has released (IMHO). It's not just a derivative and insipid riff, but the pedestrian production gives the impression of wanting to be noticed but not to offend. As for the lyrics, they feel terribly self conscious and what the hell is "Mind You Manners"as a phrase? It's DAD rock that doesn't want his kids to know he ever swore.
The playing/performance is professionally competent, and these guys can play. But this riff should have been left at the rehearsal door after 1 run through. These guys can so much better.

And already I can feel that the drum break before the bridge will become an audience interaction moment, if just for Ed to catch his breath. I wish I heard the track you guys are hearing but I don't and it's souring my anticipation for LB.

btw I think the last line in the bridge is Suffer In Hell (not we could something else) which then leads into the outro.

it's actually quite a clever phrase, given what the song is about. But you're right. If only Eddie had the song writing chops to have thrown the word fuck in there more often. Then we would have had a masterpiece.

Ouch, Stip. There's the bite the song lacks.

It always makes me laugh when people describe this song as punk and then say it sounds like Motorhead...if Matrix was here, he'd laugh too.

excellent piece, Platy. I actually basically agree with your Mind Your Manners take. It's a good song. It could have been a great song. But I've been satisfied enough with PJ's recent output (more than satisfied) that I don't need this song to be great to be excited for the new album. I just needed A: for it to be good and B: for it to showcase eddie well, since he's the major wildcard. And the rest of this was a really nice look at your history with the band.

I'll always be an outlier here (and possibly within the larger fan community as a whole) since I'm actually the intended consequence of S/T and Backspacer. After the first three albums pearl jam started to lose me. Not that I was going anywhere (even the albums I'd rank at the bottom I thought were pretty good). But I thought everything from No Code through Riot Act was flawed--either through songs I couldn't get into, the way Eddie sounded, or most of all, a sense of disconnect I felt from too much of the music. The intangible quality about PJ's music (outside of Eddie) that always meant the most to me was the mixture of energy, immediacy, and solidarity. The fact that the last two records felt 'outward' (your description, and a good one) was exactly what I thought was missing. The last two albums DID feel like a return to form. Not necessarily in terms of the sound, but in terms of how the music hit the listener. I don't think S/T or Backspacer are masterpieces (both upper mid tier albums for me, along with Yield), but whereas Yield felt like a last gasp from the band that had produced 3 of my all time favorite records (probably 1,2, and 4 at the time it came out), S/T and Backspacer felt like a rebirth. they are flawed, but S/T has some of my favorite songs, and Backspacer is probably my third favorite album to listen to from start to finish. It just lacks enough top tier songs to crack it.

So I'm in a good place with MYM and Lightning Bolt. Pearl Jam gave me my second honeymoon (granted, my initial honeymoon lasted less than most other people). If it is another upper mid tier album I'll be ecstatic (I don't think they'll ever top those first 3 but I don't think they have to either--it is okay if your best work is behind you as long as you can still produce good work). If it's not, that's okay too. I had those two albums to reinvigorate me.

who wrote Comatose? That was Mike and Stone, right? I'm guessing one of them.

Same. This is pretty much a better-articulated version of everything I've been trying to express since the new single came out.

Very good piece Platy. I think it is a fairly accurate to lot of what I think about MYM.

I don't mind that he doesn't, but I hope he's more rageful live.
