A Trump victory let’s him replace two more Justices with conservative 40-somethings, cementing right wing control of the court for a generation.

The battery/shark rant is my favorite Trump speech ever. Please add that as an instant classic at the National Archives.

that makes sense. it seems like the supreme court appointees have become the reason to vote for president for the last 20 years for both sides.

What two left-leaning judges are a lock to retire that they’re so sure he would get to replace?

He would replace Thomas and Alito.

I'm sure Thomas can't wait to get off the court, but I think Alito will grip that power in his sweaty little paws until Satan himself comes out of the ground to pull him down to Hell.

I thought the concern was he’d super-pack it and virtually eliminate any left-wing tendencies. Is the thought that Thomas and Alito are just hanging on until a Republican gets back into office?

I could be wrong but I think there have been stories in the last year or two about how much Alito hates being in D.C. and wants to get out, it seems relatively likely that he'd retire at some point during a Trump term. While replacing him (or Thomas, too) doesn't shift the 6-3 balance, it locks it in firmly by switching out two guys in their mid-70s with two people 20 or 30 years younger. Doesn't really matter if he doesn't get to replace a liberal, but Sotomayor is 69 years old and liberals are starting to get antsy at the possibility of another RBG situation.

The idea of bullying Sotomayer off the court annoys me. Maybe if Democrats are so worried they should try winning more elections.

I think the concern is that some cases are at the Constitutional amendment level and we are unlikely get a new one of those ratified any time soon, so for core Dem issues like gun control, losing another Court seat to Trumpism would be catastrophic. Maybe Sotomayer should have left after Roe was overturned so that a replacement could have been made when abortion was the top issue and a Biden nominee had a fighting chance. That time is over.

Has as much to do with the upcoming schedule of Senate elections as it does anything else.

It’s a real possibilityyyyyy that there won’t be another Democratic Senate majority for six years (or longer), regardless of who wins the presidential

CBS polled two groups of equal size.

Half were asked if “Trump” should have immunity for actions taken as President.

The primary difference:

Two-thirds of Republicans think Trump should have immunity from prosecution, but that number drops to just 45% when they're asked more generally whether "U.S. presidents" should have the same immunity. In fact, more than half of Republicans think presidents generally should not.
