All the very best of luck for the next however long, lads.
the all powerful vice president lol
he loathed trump only a few weeks ago and called him an imbecile.
he's there to take over. and why tf is trump picking him of all people? surely that merits discussion and investigation?
Any politician will pick someone that will forward their beliefs and ideals after they are gone. This guy is young and presumably will be around for a long time. Why would there be an investigation?
i meant here among us, on rm, not like an investigation at that level
although looking at his backers and sponsors, it wouldnt be a bad idea. in fact its probably vital
I'll get the commission started.

Strat wrote:vance in no way brings more people into the Trump camp though, it doesnt really make any sense politically. Trump was already gonna win Ohio, Vance policies are the exact same as Trumps.....its just more doubling down on Maga. I dont think this choice helps him in anyway
While I don't think either of these are exactly right, I also don't think they're exactly wrong either. From
yesterday's piece in The Atlantic:
The interview with the Times' Douthat shows how hard Vance is to pin down and take in. It's possible to discern the outlines of a post-Trump Trumpism that is serious and policy-minded, in contrast to the shallower culture-war approach taken by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. He expresses ideas on taxation, employment, and other economic issues that would appeal to many Democratic voters. He speaks about tariffs in a more sophisticated manner than Trump ever has. And although he has been a leading critic of the Biden administration's policy in Ukraine, his view is more nuanced than Trump's simple isolationism, and you won't find him fanboying Vladimir Putin. "It is not in our interest" for the Russians to conquer Ukraine, he told Douthat.
My sense is this is the right read, and as Strat says, yes there's an effective doubling down on the MAGA ethos; but there's also a connection to the Silicon Valley/Wall Street elite that will be more likely to open their wallets if they think there's someone more savvy pulling strings in the background.
Still, it's tough to square this quote from
Hillbilly Elegy:
“I believe we hillbillies are the toughest goddamned people on this earth [...] But are we tough enough to look ourselves in the mirror and admit that our conduct harms our children? Public policy can help, but there is no government that can fix these problems for us. . . . I don’t know what the answer is precisely, but I know it starts when we stop blaming Obama or Bush or faceless companies and ask ourselves what we can do to make things better.”
...with the RNC's focus on immigration.
I think that at the 10k-foot level, their bet is to pick up a sub-segment of liberal populists who are disenfranchised with the Biden administration, and pull in a LOT of donations between now and November from the closeted moderate coastal elite. IMO it's an extremely safe bet.

According to NPR, Elon Musk encouraged Trump to pick Vance and even pledged $45 million a month to Trump’s SuperPAC if he did so.

VC guys went D or sat the last two cycles out. Is this about concerns about Biden, or they seeing the AI safetyist capture of the Democratic party as against their interests? Something else?

Neither, IMO. They've seen the influx of CHIPS dollars, plus some key State-sponsored investment programs (ME, VT, AR, IN, probably a couple others) and understand that the VC investment model is dying, and that national security-oriented DOD/DOE contracts that leverage IP built on non-dilutive government dollars will guide the next 50 years of private investment activity.

FWIW, Ro Khanna would be a great Dem pick with a similar viewpoint

Said another way: Spotify and AirBnB have yet to turn a profit; meanwhile the Federal government is heavily invested in Micron’s $3B Idaho production facility that will bring advanced chip manufacturing back to US soil, and will likely be at capacity the first day they open up shop.

“You’re going to see a much more aggressive approach to protecting domestic manufacturers” if Trump wins a second term, Vance told POLITICO this spring.

when you have a near death experience you do have a complete attitude adjustment. it changes your whole outlook
i wonder has he had one? he does seem really deflated or changed (for him)
i cant see it being good for america or the world if he has. This isnt a come to jesus moment we need. Despite the right wing 'christian' nutjobs loving it.
I think it's just a play to pander to them

Hopefully they can make current gen chips before Taiwan gets taken, but related take: Tech is not responding to changes in the market but a sense that the Democratic party is changing the deal they had and potentially okay with blowing up the economy out of spite:
