Either he is still correct, as he was in 2016, that there are way more Bible thumping voters out there than the media and we folks on the coasts realize … or he is completely out of touch with a more and more agnostic American society in 2024.
I was under the impression that the US was becoming more and more Christian. Maybe they're just louder.
in 2011, 92% of Americans said they believed in God. In 2023, it was 81%.
So the trend is mostly downward (with some back and forth from year to year), but it’s still pretty overwhelming.
that feels really high, or like it's a poorly administered poll... But more importantly, how many believe in god vs. how many believe in a Christian version of god?

We should consult the tarot.

Annual Gallup poll.
Pretty consistent with other polling. Big thing that might make it look skewed to you here is it doesn’t differentiate between those people who vaguely believe in a God but hold no real religious affiliation…and people who practice a faith.

Trump, a formerly confirmed Presbyterian, identifies as non-denominational now. Faith leaders in the U.S. have referred to him as a “baby Christian” in his faith.
A lot of my friends have said they believe there’s something- a superior being - but they don’t know how to describe it. So they chalk it up to “the universe.”

Invoking that language is a mixed bag politically. The people who are receptive to it are verrrrry receptive to it, but a majority of religious voters don’t want it included in their politics.
My grandfather was a lifelong Republican until conservatives started invoking religious imagery and language for Trump in 2016. It felt too much like false idol talk, and he jumped ship.

It's possible that he isn't faking it. He is, after all, old as dirt, possibly going to prison and nearly had his head blown off.

Keep seeing people argue for some kind of civic or cultural Christianity. That Christianity generally works well for social cohesion, so people should be Christian. Which is a horrible argument. You can't make yourself believe in God just because it might be beneficial to society or whatever.

I agree, I don’t think he’s faking. And when you have these faith leaders reinforcing the thoughts he may be having, it’s probably hard to be objective. They’re in his face because they’re all about influencing the powerful.

Most American Christianity is pretty low maintenance. Maybe go to church for weddings and funerals, spell out "Christmas" in its entirety, have weird opinions about Israel, and that's about it.

A nation full of Christians. As well as other faiths.
Billy Graham was behind the conversion of Eisenhower. Having been raised JW, Eisenhower went against JW tenets when he went to West Point and served in WWII. While serving as President he was baptized and became Presbyterian.
Think about why Eisenhower embraced a faith in God during his lifetime.
The job of President is a quasi foxhole.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I wish they asked a more surgical question.

Well, he’s really fouling up my day. Apparently he’s gonna be in Nashville to speak at a bitcoin conference and it’s messed traffic up something awful.
