You dont want to hurt people on purpose (unless that is your shtick) or use "comedian" as some kind of get out of jail free card, but there is thin tightrope that artists walk between challenging the audience by pushing boundaries and expectations... and being an asshole. The idea that if you produce something that a large enough section of the audience rages at that makes you an asshole is simply wrong. That's exactly where self-censorship starts and art dies. Or worse, regression to the mean begins and all comedy starts to become The Big Bang Theory. I suspect right after that clip ends a better explanation is given in the conversation that clears things up, but it gives very "back in my day" vibes and maybe that is not what modern comedy audiences want. It's not like these specials are just randomly recorded and distributed. Someone vetted the act, determined it was worth the investment, and paid for it.

It's just another smarmy, transparent gaslighting tactic from a guy who regularly intimidated and investigated comedians and artists who spoke out against him.

But not transparent enough for his cult of course.

I really don't get all the hubbub about this lot. Comedians tell jokes. Some are funny, some are not. Someone will always get offended. Move on, nothing to see here.

The idea that they can tear down a rich, old, republican White man with a charge of racism and use that to elect the first female PoC president is just too good for them to pass on.

You guys are talking as if what it means to be a Republican is a static, unchanging thing. He has remade the Republican party in his image. Most don't even pretend to have principles like supporting limited government, free trade, or fiscal responsibility anymore.

A political party isn't an ideology or a belief system. It's a corporation that wants power above all else.

Sure, but does context matter at all? If he made these jokes in a comedy club somewhere, it wouldn’t be news. But at Madison Square Garden, a week before the election, as an opening act to the Republican candidate, knowing full well the giant NYC press apparatus is there to broadcast it to the world… I mean, you either want people to think this is what you believe, or you are horrendously bad a politics. Either way, this isn’t your typical offensive comic story, and they deserve the blowback.
