I think you're overestimating the average fan's fetish with prospects, particularly because most average fans (who make up about 90% of a team's fan base) couldn't name more than 1 player in a team's minor-league system.

Yes, but the 10% that do are also the most vocal.

Yeah, I mean ultimately ya got to break a few eggs to make an omelet. It was probably the right move for both clubs at the time.
I can't vouch for his time with the Red Sox Ellis, but 1996 was a pretty good year.

Hey y'all. Being a muts fan, I am used to being the big suck. But WTF happened with the phillies. 5 years ago they were in back to back world series, loaded with pitchers and a loaded farm systems. What happened? Did Amaro Jr. just destroy the team? Did everyone get real old at the same time?

They've made moves the last few years with absolutely no eye towards anything past the year they were currently in. It's almost like they thought the world was going to end in 2012.
