Given now that they're beyond the books, how much is Martin consulting on the scripts to keep things in line with what he envisioned? I've seen in multiple places that he's given the show runners guideposts to head towards, but I wonder how closely, if at all, he'll be involved in future seasons?

No idea, but with his TV background I have all the confidence that the showrunners will roll out the remained of the series staying very true to his original intentions.

GRRM is around to steer the overall story more broadly so it comes to the conclusion he's always envisioned, but otherwise, the showrunners have quite a bit of freedom as to how they get there.

from what i know of the dorne storyline, they made the right choice omitting most of it. not that it isn't compelling, but that it's complex and drawn out, and would just complicate a tv show. it also doesn't seem to have much influence on the end game.

Yea, and that's more what I was trying to get at. I don't think they'll execute every character and plot point perfectly; only that they'll generally keep the story on-track with what GRRM intended it to be.

i am worried that this flying warg bran stuff will get out of control though. hopefully GRRM keeps a tighter grip on that particular storyline.

They could have at least made it good.

Ellaria going to war against the Lannisters alone instead of a Aegon/Doran alliance. The sand snakes might just follow their book story from here on. Might as well explain the absence of Arianne.

I don't think anything official is known about his fate on the show but I'm pretty sure he just won't appear at all. Makes me question his importance in the book a little bit. Even though, as chud said, other characters could just take his role. My money is on Ellaria and the sand snakes doing everything he will achieve in the books.
Edit: Jorah having greyscale also points to JonCon never appearing.

That's how I see it. The Dornish plot has always struck me a Martin playing for time. The important thing is that there is open conflict between the Martels and the Lannisters when Dany returns to Westeros, and the show will have achieved that without Arienne or Aegon (who is likely a Blackfyre, anyway). The book just did it in a significantly more nuanced and interesting way.
