I don't know much about Chapelle or his views, but as far as I'm concerned, if a joke is funny, all topics are fair game in the appropriate setting.

They appear to have beaten the guy up pretty good. Chappelle even said he "stomped" him backstage.. weird.. imagining Chris Rock, Chapelle, and Jamie Fox beating up on the guy.. very weird.. wonder if there will be consequences for them too

Yeah, he's clearly trolling people who think he's a trans-phobe. From what I heard, he has/had a trans friend whom he was very close to, who was suicidal, and he told this story on stage. So clearly he doesn't hate trans people.

it is possible to love/support someone/something and make jokes about them at the same time

my take (which I won't defend for days on end) is that he's insulting the memory of his friend; trans people, especially trans women, tend to be suicidal because of things like the constant societal dissmisal of hatred like his as "just jokes"
