We watched Finch the other night with my Stepsons - reminded me of Short Circuit some. Hadn't thought about this move for many years - still holds up as a great family movie

The trailer for that left me befuddled as to what to expect. Not a bad thing necessarily, but most of that perception was before I knew it is by Edgar Wright.

Fuck. Shocked that I liked an Edgar Wright movie this much. Loved the fludity of the editing (didn't feel showy here like it did in Baby Driver and more appropriately in service of its subject matter). It's a dorkier take on Argento, De Palma, and Hitchcock, but done really well. It's also a bit frustrating because I was enjoying the hell out of it and there were moments when I legitimately thought it was going to be my favorite movie of the year, but then the way the plot unfurled undermined a lot of what I was enjoying about it. Not badly executed, just a story decision that made me wince in disappointment. But overall I really, really liked it, even with its flaws

I like em well enough

It's not that I dislike his work, I've just never liked one of his movies to this extent

Understood. Those two are lighter fare, but I adore Hot Fuzz.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I, too, loved Last Night in Soho but felt it didn't quite pan out in the end in the way I hoped it would. The end wasn't bad necessarily, but, yeah, it was so great up to that point and the end didn't meet that high bar. Very good movie

Watched the Rocky IV Director's Cut. It's more downbeat. Maybe slightly more realistic. The Gorbachev proxy isn't moved to applaud Rocky's speech. More Adriane/Rocky tension. You get a little bit more of Drago's personality. Paulie's robot is gone and no Merry Christmas to the kid. A way too long recap of Rocky III in the beginning. There were a few scenes like with a boxing commission that felt like filler. You can see why some of this stuff was dropped. The flow was off in spots. The original cut is better or maybe just more fun but this is nice to have. Nothing really changes the core of the movie though its just you get to see things that happened in the original that just weren't originally shown.
