11. Pryto vs. Stip
I'm voting for myself, but hats off to Pryto for making (and explaining) a team that made a number of people (myself included) take a closer look at a largely unexplored corner of the larger music universe
12. Theplatypus vs. Abnorman
Platy had one of the more satisfying front to back mixes, but abnorman has maybe my second favorite team in this.
13. Durdencommatyler vs. Kaius
While I think Sliver was a waste of a first round pick it's still a fun song. The Liz Phair and Pj Harvey songs are good and the Radiohead, Tom Waits, and Pearl Jam songs are top notch. Kais had Stinkfist Down By the Water, Hurt, a Tupac song I play in class sometimes, and a Cranberries and Smashing Pumpkins song (though not the ones I would have picked by other team). It's very close. But Just, Tremor Christ, and Goin Out West beat Stinkfist.
14. Numbers vs. Birds In Hell
Numbers is a steller team from top to bottom. I don't really care for the fugees and I don't like the breeders. Everything else here is just outstanding. This might be a better team than Abnormans. I knew almost nothing outside of Dive going into BiH's team, and heard a couple of songs I thought were pretty cool, but Numbers is a powerhouse.

In American Political Thought the first unit is on the idea of America as a 'city on a hill'--the origins of that idea, how it changed over time, how it can be interpreted in different ways, and the political consequences that follow from the interpretation. They read the John Winthrop 'Model of Christian Charity' sermon and the newspaper editorial where the term manifest destiny gets coined. Then we listen to a bunch of songs that talk about the idea without using the language. I usually use Neil Diamonds America for the soft version, Rick Derringer's Real American (Hulk Hogan's theme music) for the militant version, Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA as a critique, Ani Difranco's Not a Pretty Girl and Tupac's Changes for outsider perspectives within American society, and then Leonard Cohen's Democracy for something more aspirational. Then the students have to go out and bring in their own song and talk about it the next day.
I started using changes the second year after a student used it for their song.

Actually in my First Year Experience class this year, as an icebreaker the second day I had the students interview each other and then introduce their partner to the class. So they talked a lot about favorite musicians, etc. There was some rap artist I had never heard of a few students really liked, and they were stunned and gave me no end of shit for not knowing who it was. I had to say 'look, I'm a 37 year old white guy who moderates a pearl jam message board--what do you expect' to get out of that.

[quote="stip"]Round 2B
15. Bada vs. dsb1218
Very close. Bada has maybe my favorite Nirvana and NiN songs, an excellent pearl jam song, and a good pumpkins song. And an okay soundgarden song, but I'm not a big fan of their sludgy stuff. Oh, and a pretty good STP song. There were better AiC options, though. Weezer and Jane's addiction do nothing for me, but they aren't hurting the team or anything.
Dsb Has a fantastic REM song, a great pearl jam song, and a really good beck song. Round Here is an example of what I don't really like about Counting Crows, despite liking them. Cantaloop is a fun song, too, and a nice 10th round pick. But overall Bada's just got the stronger team---this was much closer in my mind (probably due to nightswimming) before I really went song by song.
16. Bart vs. I Got Bugs
for the most part, bart is pulling from areas of the 90s I just don't care much about, but hyperballad was a nice discovery. Bugs had a lot of stuff I didn't care about, including what may well be my bottom nirvana song, but he does have Nutshell, and against Bart's team, that's enough.
17. Delima vs. LetMeSleep
Delima needs to justify not taking a mark lanegan song. Paranoid Android is great--Like Suicide is not a favorite, but it's a good song. If there is one nirvana song I like less than Scentless Apprentice it's milk it. I like seeing Tom Waits, and Immortality is immortality. River of Deceit is a great pick too. The rest of the team I could leave.
Letmesleep is pulling a lot of stuff that I didn't listen to in the 90s, but this was a pretty solid selection of songs. Delima's lows are lower, but LetMeSleep can't touch the best moments on Delima's team.
18. Koopee27 vs. Farmer John
These are both monster teams. Koopee has some stuff I don't care about, But Rotten Apple, Wish, Drive, and Killing in the Name are all fantastic. And I am a big fan of midlife crisis. It was on my list. Wish may be the only NIN song I like more than March of the Pigs
Farmer John has an amazing first round pick, Do the Evolution, and Seasons. On the toher hand, he has both Neil Young and RHCP, which are marks against him. Again, the presence of Tom Waits and Pearl Jam is enough to pull ahead of Koopee, even though Koopee was more consistently good.

dsb - Neither of these are my favourite, but both have highlights. Say It Ain't So was my almost my 9th pick, Lithium is a beast of a song, Go is great, but too many bands I've never clicked with: NIN, Soundgarden, AIC, STP. dsb's first 4 picks are all great. dsb by a whisker.
bart - I've always been a bit undecided about Modest Mouse, but Pulp, Bjork, Outkast, Weezer and Blur (the only entry!) save the weak start.
LetMeSleep - This was a tough one. LetMeSleep edges it by choosing the shorter Soundgarden song and a better Mogwai track. And Jessie, which was a nostalgic trip. His team may not have the outright highs of Paranoid Android and Immortality, but it's solid throughout.
Farmer John - Exit Music and Karma Police are difficult to choose between, but Koopee again brings in the bands I mentioned above: AIC, STP, NIN, so Farmer John takes it.

Damn, I just got in from being out of town and thought I'd have a chance to vote in the previous round. Poor assumption on my part. On to the current round, I guess.
Me (though Bada has a great team with lots of artists right in my wheel house)
Bugs
DeLima
Farmer John

Awkward, thanks - it was a close match for me, so I initially voted for bada, but switched when going through the songs.
