As a society, our governmental needs and issues extend far, far beyond simply how much we pay in taxes and how "secure" we are as a nation. I understand voting for your own interests. But I would hope that the well-being of your fellow citizens would one of your interests. Society can't function without empathy.

If I agreed with a particular candidate's platform on taxes, security, education, health care, and energy...I would vote for them and I would not consider their stance on a social issue that doesn't affect me, even if I disagreed with them on it 100%.

You're telling me you would hinge your vote in the situation described above on the social issue?

I was also referencing Hillary Clinton getting lambasted for misinterpreting Nancy Regan's stance on AIDS. In the grand scheme does that really matter?

Yes, absolutely. Certain social issues are pass/fail for me. If you're anti-abortion, I don't give a shit what your economic policies are. The thought of women's rights being stripped away scares me a hell of a lot more than paying higher taxes.
