This is not a wholly original thought (the guy from Sox Prospects posted something similar this morning), but I guess the rational line of thinking is that he didn't get fired for anything he did, but rather was fired because they didn't think he's the right fit for what comes next--i.e., restocking and developing the farm system, building around a young core without breaking the bank. Like chud said: makes sense even if you don't agree with it.

Yeah, I just dont think they are "there" yet, I feel like there was still another year at least in this group. Seems pretty clear now though that Betts is gone in the offseason, maybe JD as well if he opts out.

Also, I've got a problem with shitcanning a guy that just won the World Series with 3 weeks left in the season. He earned finishing the contract out at least.

That was my first thought, too. It sucks coming less than a year after winning the World Series, but he was hired to go all-in and win it all. He got the job done, but now they can't go anymore all-in than they already have, so the direction has to change.

The way this has been handled the last 24 is a disgrace.

I don't understand this. I remember when Dombrowski was the guy who took the Marlins from the '97 fire sale and turned it into the foundation for the '03 champs. Didn't he develop the Tigers farm system and build that team into champs?

(Mind you I haven't followed baseball closely on a day-to-day basis for several years now, so I'm probably missing something--I'm just not sure what.) Why wouldn't you want Dombrowski overseeing your rebuild?

The more I think about it, the more I think this move is about slashing as many costs as possible in preparation for a sale.

I friend of mine mentioned a scenario to me today: Boston trades David Price and Andrew Benintendi for basically nothing. They use the money saved on the Price contract to sign Betts.
