I don't know what to think right now, but this timeline of events is kind of hilarious:

I honestly can't remember a more out-of-nowhere offseason move.

Strange move. Isn't Lamoriello kinda washed up as a GM?

That was my first thought as well. Should be prefect for Toronto.

My guess is that he's there as part of the front office team rather than a pure GM role. He'll stay for a couple years until he retires and Dubas takes over. They've spent the last year building a "dream team" of young, up-and-coming front office and analytics types from outside the NHL, and, more than anything, this is a move to add some experience to the front office.

This sounds like there's way too much going on in the FO, but I guess we'll see how it shakes out.

It's a somewhat new and innovative approach, which I love to see in sports. So far, they've each had their defined roles (Shanahan oversees everything, Hunter runs scouting/draft, Dubas in charge of player development/minor league affiliates) and I assume Lamoriello will fit into the trading/negotiations aspect of that system.

People like to take shots at the Leafs, and most of those shots are well-deserved. But right now they're making a lot of really interesting, progressive moves. A year ago, I would have been pissed at a Lamoriello signing because I would have seen it as a short-term answer. Now I just see it as part of the plan. He'll work some trades, negotiate with other teams, mentor the young front-office and retire. I don't think there's anything more to it than that.

Is Bettman reading the Goodell press and thinking, "there's an idea, take down the best player in the league!"

All kidding aside, this is really sad news.
