while I think there's a kernel of truth to this, this thing is very much a referendum on China's ability to contain a health crisis, as well as their state-run media; and it's also a pretty good litmus test for what happens to the world economy when an emerging manufacturing superpower is completely hobbled.

Just before this hit the news I was watching the Mars series on Netflix and they were talking about when there's an outbreak like this, an country can choose to go into lockdown and try and contain it right from the start, but because doing that will damage their economy they never do and do the best to keep it all under wraps till it gets so big, and then it's too late

The flu is a perfect reference for why it’s not fearmongering. One thing virologists are worried about is that its mutability and transmissibility will make it something that returns regularly, fading and then blossoming like the flu does. “It’s basically like the flu” isn’t a reason to relax...it’s a representation of how serious the problem is.

While it's true that this is a flu, and may not affect us as severely, the info is still incredibly limited. On purpose or not, that bothers me.
It's also true that between 17-20% of confirmed cases are severe, and that is troubling.

it's 2.3% for corona vs. 0.1% for flu

But that's US flu mortality rates.

It also kills men a bit more.

What a nightmare it must be working in that hospital.

I was just presented with an interesting opportunity which is providing a list of questions to the Department of Public Health in Illinois. My contact there will get this in front of their experts to provide what answers they can.

I can provide proof of this if needed but I want to move quickly to get a list of questions in front of them.
