I thought they made it clear that they wanted the $600 check that was issued to be $2000. Of course, if the lockdowns continue and this is the last stimulus bill...

Oh that is fucked up. No way was it ever $2,000 total.

Why can't anyone just speak straightforward truth?

After Trump made his demand that it should be $2,000 the House immediately passed a bill to increase the check to $2,000. It wasn't a bill that would have made it $2,600 total. It would have either been a single $2,000 check or the initial $600 check followed by an additional $1,400.

The bill the House had been advocating for before Trump's comments was for a $2,000 check. At the risk of choking on my own words I don't think they're actually being deceptive here.

It was exactly the bold as I recall.

Fair enough. I of course don't reside in the US of A and so am unaware of the intricacies of the stimulus.

From where I'm standing though it always looked like an additional $2K to the $600 previously paid.

Yea, as stated above, it was always going to be $2000 total. That's why I'm annoyed at the progressive half of the left for calling this into question. Pick your battles, guys. This ain't one.

And for real, $2,000 is a disgrace for the richest country in the world.

And you have yet to get it.

Fucking hell.

Idk, the proposal by the president has a huge effect setting kind of the terms of debates and what the fight will be over. Obviously what you're saying is technically true. But Biden is calling for something that had a decent amount of bipartisan support two weeks ago. I'd expect the House to pass something very close to what he's asking for here. If Biden asked for $1,400 and they increase it I think they'd be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and making it easy for Republicans who were for it when Trump said it to oppose it now. This is the smart play.

That's like $600 billion in direct payments. Aside from past direct payments and increased unemployment, etc.

Of all times to offer real financial support this was when 1st world governments needed to step up. Like go into debt step up.

I've said before, the Australian government increased social security payments and bought in a stimulus payment of $1,500 per employee per fortnight for all permanent employees of all businesses with a downturn of over 30% from the previous year.

This meant we were able to pay rent and feed the kids. That's why Australia is still managing this thing and essentially still mostly "open".

600 billion is not a big deal for the US. Your government has failed you.
