Re: Let's Actually Listen to Spotify's Top 100 Songs
I had heard snippets of #97. I am certainly just out of touch. I don’t always need my music to go big, but we have these two singles here and neither seemed all that compelling to me, mostly because I think my tastes tend to start with instrumentation that gets filled in with the vocals and lyrics once I’ve been pulled in. This doesn’t fall anywhere near that pattern, mostly because these two songs at least are all in on her vocals and the music at best an afterthought.

97. Billie Eilish - "When the Party's Over"
I've enjoyed a few Billie Eilish songs in the past when I've heard them played on the radio, though this one feels different than any of the ones I recall. I like the stripped down frailty of it and how the music echoes the swells of the vocals, starting with a little oscillating texture and transitioning towards some choral effects and finally actual vocal layers. From my own listening experiences, there's aspects of this that remind me of the first James Blake record (the only one I've ever bothered with) or perhaps some of the more intimate stuff that Joanna Newsom has done on her last couple records. This definitely reflects a very different vibe than anything else in the Top 100 so far.

96. Post Malone - 'I Fall Apart'
I actually have quite a soft spot for Post Malone. My kids have had him on regular rotation over the years and back in 2017 his song 'Congratulations' was kinda the theme song all season for my son's U18s hoops team that I coached. And I really enjoyed his Nirvana tribute show he did a few years ago from his home.
This song is what I imagine to be standard fare for a decent percentage of this list. Heavy auto-tune, go big on the bass where you can and emoting on relationship regrets. All with generally excellent production qualities too I should add.
I enjoyed this enough, wouldn't be fussed about it being on a playlist near me, but not something I would ever seek out myself. Probably my fave of the first 5 songs here.

I was going to say that was my least favourite song so far, but then I remembered Imagine Dragons.

Re: Let's Actually Listen to Spotify's Top 100 Songs
I quite liked 'White Iverson' and 'Congratulations', but 'I Fall Apart' does nothing for me. He obviously uses auto-tune in most/all of his stuff, but it's especially egregious on the above track.
And I'm with Higgs re: the Coronirvana set. That shit ruled.

Re: Let's Actually Listen to Spotify's Top 100 Songs
Post Malone is a swing and a miss for me -- a fusion of hip-hop and Dashboard Confessional-level wallowing is not something I ever suspected I might want or need in my life, and I expect songs of this general persuasion will prove consistent stumbling blocks for me in this exercise. I'm just completely removed from the target demographic for this in every possible way. I give it a D, but with the caveat that I feel completely unqualified to tbe teaching the class.

That video is insufferable but the song doesn't bother me as much as most Maroon 5 songs. It has some energy to it.

Re: Let's Actually Listen to Spotify's Top 100 Songs
Yeah, I think the videos detract from the enjoyment for most of these songs.
