It does often comes down to intent, or motivation, which can be hard to prove objectively in most cases. Except for when they explicitly say they are making this or that for those reasons. i think there is a difference between making something from the heart - from one's unique perspective - and checking off boxes to satisfy the moral restraints of some ideology.

Then there is this, which...come on. It's fucking woke
Keep in mind this is supposed to be part of a dark, adult fantasy series. Now they sound like they are talking down to children. "Every interaction sounds like HR is in the room" was a pretty great criticism from a big critic who normally goes out of the way not to talk about that stuff.

There are a lot of different aspects to it. If a group of people hired based on diversity quotas instead of merit make a movie, but there isn't any woke messaging in it, is the work they produce "woke"? I'd say no, but the hiring practices certainly are. A lot of it gets into "corporate" wokeness, too...

content being “Woke” does not mean it’s bad art or not enjoyable. It’s usually when it gets into retcon/replacement scenarios you see the rage bait folks come out

A movie like Get Out seems to be a movie criticizing the woke tendencies of white liberals, no? In Mad max's case, the overt boys vs girls thing is so comical that the feminist messaging can be ignored pretty easy. Plus, let's face it, the bad guys always come out cooler in these movies.

The word "woke" was appropriated, bastardized and weaponized by the right to the point that it's meaningless; a catchall. Having this debate (or discussion if you're feeling generous) with these people is pointless. As has already been pointed out, the goalposts aren't fixed. No matter what happens, they'll find a way to be right and to call you an idiot while doing doing it. It's exhausting.

The exchange below is very timely. Originally, in the second tweet Hudlin had the video QT'd, but it was deleted by the original poster after he replied so I had find another tweet like it.

Some of you were. Especially for an N&D thread.

Transacting on a marginalized identity just to capture more dollars should be regarded very suspiciously by the audience. Since this thread is about Star Wars, I’ll just say the attempts at representation in the new trilogy started off just great, but their abandonment of certain character arcs really underscored their lack of commitment to representation.
Killers of the Flower Moon ? no way

Maybe we can continue it when Burt's ban expires in 7 days

Banning Burt this close to the election was a mistake.

Banning Burt is always a mistake. He's one of our top posters.
