I get that but characters like McNulty and Freamon are the crux of the series. They care more about getting bad guys than appeasing their bosses, which results in termination and getting buried in the pawn shop department or whatever the hell Lester was doing.
There is a comment in the first episode about Daniels where someone says "he hasn't pissed anyone off yet." Essentially, that's what it takes to rise up the ranks in the police department. Rather than, ya know, good police work. Simon needed a character like McNulty to show what happens to detectives who care more about their job than playing politics.
Without McNulty, I don't think you have a show.

Season 2 is great. The change of scenery can be a bit jarring at first, but the story is fantastic.

I agree, but I didn't appreciate it nearly as much the first time around.
