If you forget about it a lot, like habitually, that must also mean that you remember it a lot. So who wins?
Forgetting, ya jackass. No--but what I mean is that it's never the album I think of when I think "Ah, I would like to listen to Sigur Ros," and then I fire up my iPod and there it is and I think, "Huh, maybe I should listen to that one," but then I almost always don't and then I forget about it again until the cycle repeats, and the sun sets and the sun also rises, etc.

I get that, and it happens to me too. Valtari isn't a go-to album, but it's there for when I'm in enough of a quiet and reflective space. And then it surprises me with its awesomeness. I don't think an album's weaker just because it's not conducive to every mood or whatever. The new one is more listenable to me, whatever mood I'm in, which just means it's more accessible, not sure about 'better'.

This band are probably the only band who's ever made me think 'They should make a double album.'

Good review, but 'hauntology'? Really?

Also, I never found out how well the last album was received. Did people generally not like it? I wasn't enthralled straight away but ended up thinking it was excellent, even though it required a crazy amount of patience. This one is a brilliant album but, for me, different because everything on it was instantly likable. The second half of the album had to grow on me slightly, mind.

I had the same experience with Valtari as you, Harmless. I liked the first song they released, so I checked out the leak and had a pretty lukewarm opinion of it. I came back to it several months later and found out that I quite enjoyed it, and it actually started rekindling my love for the band, as I had kind of lost touch with the music after the 2008 album and through the hiatus. I just ordered Kveikur and Valtari from XL yesterday, so I can have a physical copy of the latter, and because I like what I've heard so far from the former.

I don't know about you guys, but I think it's sweet that VG is so lost.

Oh, that VG.

Valtari will grow on you. It doesn't make a lot of sense at first.

How is THIS record 'weird'? It's a bit different but it's not weird. It's a little too conventional once or twice actually. I don't know much about My Bloody Valentine but if it sounds like them, it's the first time SR have sounded like anyone else.

OK, yeah. You're right. It's either weird or a refreshing change, or maybe both. There are only a few songs that seem unfamiliar though, and they're pretty much on the first half. Everything else could've been on Takk or Med whatever it's called, imo. It's the instrumentation and vocal effects that are most different.

This sounds like a great name for a Sugar Ray / Sigur Rós cover band.

yeah, the vocal effects are kinda similar to MBV and some of the effects on the guitars too. And some of the songs are kinda uptempo...is that something regular for them? Because of all the records i heard, i didnt noticed something more uptempo than these songs.

Well, the heaviness is unusual (except for on something like the end of 'Glossoli' or ( ) #8). But the drums have been there before; I already mentioned Takk; other songs, including Hoppipola and Gong, had prominent rhythms. And Med whatever it's called has several songs featuring a rhythm section. So it's not unprecedented; it just sounds like it because of all the distorted guitar / bass and weird vocals, and the general sombre mood of a few of the songs.
