Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine in a speech that appeared to serve as a declaration of war. Russian troops have already begun to move into eastern Ukraine, and large explosions were reported by journalists in Kyiv and other cities immediately after Putin's speech. While the initial scale of Putin's military operation remains unclear, the U.S. has warned that Russia is now prepared to launch a full-scale invasion of the country. -Axios

Putin warned other countries that any attempt to interfere with the Russian action would lead to “consequences they have never seen”.

The UN national security meeting was incredible. Russia presides.

The last words of the meeting were by the Ukrainian representative, spoken directly to the presiding Russian: “There is no purgatory for war criminals. They go straight to hell, mister ambassador.”

The USSR and then Russia not voting in the Security Council for conflicts involving them would be *chefs kiss*. Doesn't matter cuz China wouldn't go for it even if they prevailed.

The UN has about as much credibility as The League of Nations these days. Has a country ever been kicked out?

I think the UN only got involved in Korea because the USSR was boycotting it over Taiwan having a seat instead of CCP, so only if you count self removal?

A manuever only a former Model UN/ debate club member could dream up of.

A lot of talk in the media about how we will punish Russia with sanctions, not much in the way of explicit aknowledgements about how we are effectively powerless to change facts on the grouns.

Putin's language threatening those that would interfere with "A response that you have never seen" seems to exempt Japan (already got nuked). Time to finish the work of 1905, Tokyo.

Have you seen any comparisons to Hungary in 56 or Czechoslovakia in 68? Its the same justification but far crueler implementation.

I don't know if the Ukranians really have the resolve for a long term insurgency, it seems almost as insane as the invasion. The Hungarians fought for a bit, the Czechs less so, maybe learning from the Hungarians.

In case you missed it, the Russians have specialized hard sided trucks for prisoner transport, and they were seen with Russian National Guard (Rosgvardiya) units from Chechnya.

This seems to suggest that they intend to invade pretty deep into Ukraine as these units are occupation troops, not the spearhead.

Yet those countries were already under the heavy influence and puppet rule by the Soviets under the iron curtain. There were uprisings, and maybe it's hindsight, but they were doomed to fail. I think this invasion, if it continues into a full ground invasion of all of Ukraine, is more similar to Poland in 1939, after Germany first had taken other land they felt belonged to them, to allegedly protect Germans in those areas. Although the consequences then were WW2, and that (WW3) won't happen only by invading Ukraine this time.
