They tried it one of the nights in camden in 08 and messed it up so the switched to corduroy

I don't think that falsetto, i'm not sure it's even technically that, ever sounds good. It sounds flat by default. It's an overtoned sound kind of what Janis Joplin used to do. For some reason i liked it more live then the studio version. It's only gets worst when it's fiddled with IMO. I do like it as a stylistic choice as an alternative to doing those notes in full voice because it makes it sound less 1987 power ballad this way.

In retrospect, I'm really glad I heard this song a few times prior to experiencing the whole album for the first time. Otherwise, I might've been thrown into a state of shock and the remainder of the album would've come across as one big sonic blur.

Janelle has given me a new appreciation for that stuff.

I've tried to getaway from this thought, but every time I listen to this song it becomes more and more apparent that it might be the best song on the record. For all its overwrought cheese, it's just so unapologetically massive, and makes the biggest statement here.

most of the reviews seem to hone in on this one.

Still love it.

I can definitely say I had the biggest emotional reaction to this song than I have for any song since Thumbing My Way (which makes me tear up virtually every time).

Yup. Disappointing.

That's a tough one. Tuning down probably isn't an option with all the open strings it would sound pretty off.

this does bother me, maybe more than it should. but it bothers me more than any questionable business decision they may have made or anything like that.. i could overlook that stuff as long as the music stays real and genuine.

eddie now relies - somewhat heavily now - on machines to make himself sound different than he does naturally. is it an insecurity thing? i mean the guy can still sing quite well, just not in those higher registers. i wish he would just come to grips with the fact that he's 50, and would stick to his strengths and keep it real.

it's ok to get older ed.. really.

I do not care if ed can hit notes live these days. We will always have the albums and a live performance is a fleeting moment that invovles many different aspects that can make or break it.

yea, but the live performances are real. the albums are turning out to be misrepresentations. I mean at what point does what eddie's doing become the same as what all the phony pop 'artists' out there do? I don't want to hear a pearl jam album ten years from now that features an eddie that sounds like he's 32. yea, that might sound good, but it'd be totally artificial.

ah.. I'll try to stop dwelling on this and go back to enjoying the record. I'll try to postpone any further disappointment until my string of shows is over.
