This thread is a perfect encapsulation of how public discussion of crucial topics gets wrapped up into water cooler comfort food.

A white supremicist quoted and praised the president in a manifesto before murdering 50 people, the president continued to intentionally use that same language for political gain, and most of the last page and a half is about whether or not a kid who got beat up by adults for breaking an egg on a racist was awesome or just a shit.

So far it’s been about the same as any time a country does something we’ve decided to believe is impossible: we begrudgingly admit it happened/is happening, but determine not to have any real discussion about it.

This seems like the smart path to me. Make it unequivocally clear no one is coming for the guns people already have, then stop the manufacture and sale of more of them. Slowly, over years, you then incentivize people to sell them to the government for destruction.

So the gun law hasn't changed here yet (looks like it will though), and before anything official has taken place there's apparently quite a few people who own the AR-15 legally who have been handing them in for destruction
