You know, it's totally believable that this could be a video game. I would imagine it'd be about a disgruntled waiter that's sick of diners treating him like shit. He finally snaps one day, and Rosary beds in one hand (for strangling victioms) and his 9mm pistol in the other, he goes on a rampage killing those diners that were rude to him.

Thanks for posting that man. It's a bummer the vid cuts out just before the best part.

It's hard to tell on my shitty work ear buds, but Eddie's seems to be doing well with the vocals.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Sounds good but also wish it was the whole thing.

meh.

After about five listens in one week I still feel nothing.

I haven't felt good after a new pearl jam song since "Marker in the Sand". True story.

I still think his anger sounds forced and not purposefully sarcastic. I think a lot of people are putting their own sociopolitical spin on it but I don't hear a strong central message. The song just feels overstuffed with words to me without a clear target.
eddie doesn't care for blind obedience. to hell with god's will.. we can take control of things if we want to. or, we can just sit back, be quiet, mind our manners, accept all the shit that's going on in the world and just suffer through it, and then go live in a paradise in the clouds for eternity after we die. wouldn't that be swell?
Obviously Ed's songs are open to a lot of interpretation but I'm just not hearing what you are laying down here.

Sure he was occasionally more direct on S/T but those songs sounded like a journal entry. He was decidedly *less* direct, to a vague extent, on Comatose. I mean I just don't get what people are wanting. I think it's 100% obvious what these lyrics are about and who Ed is attacking. Just my opinion, but what do people want? Was there a golden era of directness that people want Ed to return to? "Role, role model, roll models in blood..."? That's not direct either. That's metaphor, and the target of the venom could be anyone. That's part of the deciphering. I just think some people here are making up reasons to be unhappy with this.
Satan's Bed wasn't direct? Uh yeah it was. It was a stinging indictment of vanity and the self-exploitative nature of celebrity. I know this because I read the lyrics in the liner notes and also because you can actually hear what Ed is singing most of the time.

Look obviously there are a ton of PJ songs open to interpretation. I would argue, however, that the angrier ones tend to be pretty damn direct. Which again is what I don't understand about this song. Is this serious angry "Leash" Ed or sarcastic angry "Do the Evolution" Ed? Right now everyone is seemingly pissed off at religion so they are going with "angry Ed" but I'm not convinced. Slamming religion that broadly would be a pretty big step for the band to take. Even in some of Ed's most politically or socially pointed songs there's traditionally been a through line of self-doubt.

Yeah, his write up was the best one I've ever read on it. I'd like Jorge's opinion - and, mostly his opinion on what happened post-Binaural.

Ed is not 'slamming religion'. I'm not going to write again in detail about what I think he's doing, but there's loads of stuff I've written on it if you care to look. In short, white middle America peddling fundamentalist conservative views and policies under the guise of religion, whilst telling us to mind our manners: anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-women etc. The chorus is more hopeful and suggests another way. He's not slamming faith, or people with faith, at all. He's slamming a particular large contingent. Yes, I'm doing some interpretation work, but it doesn't take me long to get some answers.

It seems to me that you're confusing 'direct' with 'angry and full of cuss words'. This song doesn't contain 'Satan's Bed', and it doesn't contain the line 'I never sucked Satan's dick', but it's still perfectly obvious to me what it's about, and the songs you mention are *not* more obvious and they are *not* more objective (which is what I think you mean by 'direct'). Ed is not swearing his mouth off in this song, making dick jokes or calling anyone Satan or rolling them in blood... but is all that needed for directness? Ed's surely just calling for his interpreters to try a little harder here. But I do mean 'a little', because I'm still dumbfounded that people don't understand what this song is about. It's snarky and sarcastic, not raging. The mood, the intent, the target and the method are not the same as the songs you mention above. So I'm guessing this is going to be another song (like Amongst The Waves) which had an intention (to be like X or Y other song in their catalogue?) but just didn't reach it? Not imo. I don't really know what to say about the self-doubt thing, I thought you wanted directness? I don't think Ed is in any doubt of the things he's singing here, and why should he be? Should he be pulling any punches against fundamentalist religion? I'm glad he isn't.

I took it to mean (on the 'choruses' 'self realised bit) that he was internalising it. 'Fuck this I don't need it or need to hear about it'. That what he was looking for in god and the idea of god has been corrupted by malign forces and that what he's been looking for resides in the self.

Just my take.

Yup, that too. That's kind of what I meant by another way. It's more a kind of 'IF this is what religion is ('polite' and 'well-mannered', hypocritical society) then I don't want it' thing. He's not slamming the idea of faith; in fact he's prepared to use spiritual imagery for his path because he would rather be able to reach 'God' directly. I think Ed has always felt a sense of if God *did* show up, that would be cool. But he's not in all of this hollow posturing.
