I've been skipping over this song a bit too much having driven it into the ground a bit over the past few months, but it truly is excellent. It was such an excellent surprise to hear this song for the first time, and the outro hits me in a way I haven't felt with the band since something like Let it Ride, where the cumulative total of what Ed and the band are pulling off in the end becomes really moving.

the fact that this tune overcame its title so seamlessly is a testament to its goodness

This.

We all had a meltdown when we saw that title.

I was convinced Andy woods ghost had possessed Ed.

It’s 100% a title he’s come up with.

I didn’t melt down at all because at that point I barely cared and wasn’t optimistic in any way that Gigaton would be any different than the last two. But it sure as hell didn’t give me more confidence!

The song is wonderful though. It’s kind of been swallowed up by my desire to hear the rest of the album, so I’ve made a consistent effort to continue to give it listens. It’s still damn good every time.

Its easily one of the best on here.
And a brave decision to put this new courageous sound right next to the most Pj sounding song on the record. One honoring the past and themselves and their influences the other a strong step forward also honoring other influences.

Or something

We really need to give Ed props for NOT doing

Confusion is... to the ocean

I mean, it was right there for him. That must have been difficult.

Kevin Davis wrote:I love the "numbers keep falling off the calendar's floor" lyric -- even if the exact physical sequence it's trying to describe isn't clear, I think the sense and feeling it's trying to convey is, and the language is satisfying in itself. This idea that every day that passes away actually physically lands somewhere, and leaves a hole in the space it fell from -- it heightens that feeling that time isn't simply this passive thing that happens, but rather something we're accountable to, something that will eventually be a mess for someone else to clean up if all we do is let it fall. The outro (the "girls wanna dance/boys wanna grow" section) really underlines this in a way that has turned out to be almost painfully prescient in this moment, describing mankind in this kind of self-interested pursuit of superficial things, until they're rudely awakened by a some force or circumstance greater than their own wills ("stand back when the spirit comes").

I've been listening to this song a lot over the last couple days. I think it's an all-time great Pearl Jam song, a genuine career highlight.
I feel ya on this one. I think this and Buckle Up are the two songs on this album that are great songs in the context of Pearl Jam's entire career, while the rest of the songs I like on this album tend to be great in the context of latter day Pearl Jam.

And I think we both have a pretty strong dislike for the odd track out of those 4.
