the sox got peavy for iglesias's defensive value to the tigers. then again, stephen drew's defensive value wasn't worth multiple years and a compensation pick.
Exactly. We got nothing back for Iglesias.
Peavy was decent in the 2nd half for them, hell the first half of this year. It wasnt a huge return, but then again, Iglesias isnt that good.
Peavy was a second Ryan Dempster and did almost nothing to help us win.
He kept Ryan Dempster(and Webster, Workman, etc.) out of the rotation, and gave them quality starts. Had Lester or Lackey gone down, Peavy would have been more valuable conceivably. I'd still make that trade today and have no problem with it.
We gave up a star defensive shortstop, which we had to resign stephen drew to address the hole it left, in order to get a 4.04 ERA (Peavy's with the Sox in 2013) instead of a 4.9 (Workman's that year). Not worth it as far as I'm concerned. We still make the playoffs without Peavy in 2013 and once we got there he was garbage.
He didnt pitch well in the World Series, but had a very good start against Tampa in the DS. Maybe they didnt need to make the trade when all was said and done, but it was prudent to solidify the rotation before the stretch run. Iglesias, while an incredible defender, cannot hit, and I'm ok with letting him walk when you have Bogaerts and Marerro right behind him in the system.
Except for his rookie year in which he hi 258, Ozzie Smith didn't crack 250 until his 7th year in the majors. He didn't touch .280 until his 8th year. Bats can come around later, and Igeslias's defense was that good.
You know as well as I do he was doing it with smoke and mirrors, you were watching the same games. The guy had so many weird bloopy infield hits in the first half. I'm not saying Iglesias isnt an amazing shortstop, and that I wouldnt want him on the team now. I was willing to make that sacrifice to get a 3rd starter in here and go for that World Series. Just like I would be willing to trade Bradley this year for someone like Peavy if they were in the same spot.
And I'm fairly certain Iglesias can hit a respectable number at some point in his career. He put up that stretch when he got to Detroit, so it's not like he can't do it. And I don't know what you're talking about with the smoke an mirrors crap, Iglesias's defense was off the charts, and that didn't change either when he went to Detroit.

What the Red Sox should have done was kept Iglesias at SS, move X to 3B in the minors, and left him at AAA until he got his 500 at-bats (you know, the rule they had in place back when their prospects converted to studs). Let Middlebrooks play 3b until X is ready and then trade him, or if Middlebrooks is still that bad you find some stopgap.

Not his defense, it was spectacular. I meant his hitting.

I don't give a shit about his hitting. Like I said it took Ozzie Smith a quarter of his career to crack .250 and he was good enough for the HoF.

Simmons for ATL is the closest thing we have seen to Ozzie. Sure he is only gonna drive in like 50 runs but he will save 50.

SImmons will hit enough eventually. He had some pop last year. He needs a little patience and he will be fine. a future 2 hole.

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you there.

FELIX, son.

6 innings pitched & 3 or less runs allowed = "Quality Start"

7 innings & 2 or less = No common term. Felix has blown past the record for this stat. Let's just call it a "Felix"

Chris Sale ain't going down without a fight.

8 IP, 0 ER, 0 R, 4 H, 12 K, 2 BB.

No decision, however, thanks to the White Sox bullpen.

Twitter is a treasure chest of random Chris Sale stats tonight. It helps me forget momentarily how bad the Sox pen is.
Kershaw is obviously the best pitcher in the world. And I wouldn't argue much against someone putting King Felix second. But Sale is at worst the third best starting pitcher on the planet right now.

Here's the thing about Kershaw.

11% might not seem like that big of a deal. But over time, 11% can actually become pretty significant.

11% of batters that Felix faces are designated hitters. They are paid to do nothing - nothing - but hit.

11% of batters that Kershaw faces are pitchers. They are paid to do the opposite of hitting.

Since 2011 Kershaw has a better overall ERA (Kershaw 2.14, Hernandez 2.93), a better ERA vs. the AL (Kershaw 2.46, Hernandez 3.01), and a better ERA vs. the NL (Kershaw 2.10, Hernandez 2.23).

For further comparison, Sale's ERA since he became a starter in 2012...

Overall: 2.80
vs. AL: 2.88
vs. NL: 2.05
