It's annoying from an outsider's perspective (ie. someone who doesn't buy merch) bc they know how much of this crap to make, and it just feels like they are creating a merch market to rake the fans over. It's just enough to create a buzz and demand bc it might become obscure, but not too much so that anyone can buy it. They've really cornered the "get this while you can....if you're lucky" market

The current model aims to maximize profits while minimizing effort. I would rather if they simply aimed to maximize profit.

I get it, the mania surrounding shirts, posters and other trinkets is something I've never seen with any other band.

I can understand how someone would look at it all and come away feeling as though there's something very tawdry about the whole business and that it detracts from a focus on the music and the performance.

Especially when they release 1 album very 6 years

I feel if they were a "merch machine" there'd be a lot less limited edition stuff that I can't buy.

There's definitely intention on the band's part to fan the flames of that merch hysteria.

Definitely. And there's a lot of limited edition stuff. There's not a lot of each limited edition item, but there are a lot of items that become limited edition.

I haven't bought anything from the band besides music-related stuff for a decade, but from a strictly financial perspective, they have done a really good job of ramping up the merchandise as their fan base gets older and has more disposable income.
