Instituting a curfew is a really odd thing to do. I understand the why behind it, but its an awfully fucked up way to suppress freedom of speech. Im not sure

Morgan Freeman referring to these cops as a "biker gang" is awesome.

I suppose it's meant to limit the number of people out and give police an excuse to focus on anyone who is out, just because they're out.

can we talk about police unions? they that constantly protect these assholes and that routinely block measures to hold police more accountable and less violent and are just as much of the problem as the asshole cops themselves. hell, the reason why it was so difficult for minneapolis to institute any meaningful change when everyone acknowledged it was necessary is because of the police union. and when it comes time to renegotiate contracts (that are collectively bargained (another problem)), the union refuses to budge.

I've heard a lot chatter over the past 10 days about cutting budgets. But how about focusing on this systemic problem as well? I assume that part of it is antithetical to the whole notion of union = good for the worker. not in this instance.

It doesn't make any sense. We're seeing in real time how cities that have removed curfews are having fewer instances of violence.

The curfew's only purpose is to give police an excuse to beat and/or arrest people. It's utter bullshit and indefensible.

There was an activist on NPR who was asked about this and she hand waived it away mentioning something about changing union and department leadership. Its pretty clear who the unions want as their leadership...
