I can't think of too many examples where this band has done atmosphere very well. This isn't NIN Grizzly Bear or anything. I've seen this band as a part of the sweaty beer chugging variety and less of the chin stroking kind.

I can. Everything pre-S/T. It all depends on what you mean by atmosphere.Tuolumne wrote:I can't think of too many examples where this band has done atmosphere very well.
Some of the fans are "a part of the sweaty beer chugging variety", but I don't think you can reduce PJ down to that. You must know that most of their mid-career stuff is more intelligent. Oh yeah, and forget NIN. They haven't been atmospheric since... I don't know when. It's all shtick now.Tuolumne wrote:This isn't NIN Grizzly Bear or anything. "Atmosphere" isn't something so neatly compartmentalized; it's not limited to (extremely well-executed) songs like Of The Girl or Cold Confession or Sleight of Hand. Some of the more propulsive songs in their catalog create their own unique sonic space and atmosphere (Go, Faithful, Rival, Tremor Christ, Help Help). Distinctly evocative and atmospheric pieces used to characterize their work.Tuolumne wrote:I can't think of too many examples where this band has done atmosphere very well. binaural seemed like a concerted effort to capture and create atmosphere. but i agree with your larger point that it's more often the result of the song not the starting point (insert that latin phrasing you used in another post).--- wrote:"Atmosphere" isn't something so neatly compartmentalized; it's not limited to (extremely well-executed) songs like Of The Girl or Cold Confession or Sleight of Hand. Wash, oceans, off he goes, indifference, tremor christ, help help, you are, w.m.a, wishlist, sometimes, dead man, faithful, no way, strangest tribe, otherside, push me pull me, i'm open, most of binaural..........
When i say atmosphere, i mean atmosphere for pearl jam, im not expecting them to sound like NIN for an album.
Or what those guys said.

It seems strange that you'd pull out a band that specialises in 'Atmosphere' with a capital 'A' just to argue that PJ has no atmosphere. For any band you could name, there's another one that specialises in more deliberate atmosphere. NIN would easily be trumped by Sigur Ros in this regard, but that doesn't make NIN devoid of atmosphere.

i would say that most of their output has a very distinct atmosphere. NIN is a different beast, for sure.

Atmospheric is when the music sucks you in to a place where you belong
With brick walking and an increase in urgency
The space for us to enter and breathe has been purged for me
Immoratalities, present tenses, slight of hands an nothing as it seems
Since 2003 we have yearned to see
A band that had once opened the space for us to roam
Has replaced that china with styrofoam
Take these recent leaks to help you believe
It's not about there completeness or quality
But the sound oh the sound
That's the place they need to be.
NIN is another thread
But I disagree about the shtick
NIN back from the dead
Trent Reznors craft always does the trick
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

Matt was suitably spacey in Binaural, Riot Act and whatever he played on Lost Dogs. I have no idea what happened after that.surfndestroy wrote:Space is not Matt's strength. Also they just play it too fast now.Thejambi wrote:The space for us to enter and breathe has been purged for me

Force of nature, the fixer, and just breathe (not the chorus) are all very atmospheric songs in that regard.

I think Backspacer does contain atmosphere but it seems more by-the-numbers and contrived atmosphere than it used to.
