Watched My Neighbor Totoro again last night. Such a simple and beautiful movie.

Later, I remembered Matt and Trey's tribute to Miyazaki.

I don't know if "enjoyable" is the right word but I liked it more than I usually do dark, gothic, pulpy movies. Moves along at a fast clip so you don't get a chance to get bored. One of McConaughey's against-the-type roles he's been excelling at recently.

Late to the party, but "Dallas Buyers Club" gets an A-. I'm a sucker for any movie that's based on a true story.

Good question.

I guess it's because so many movies are "make believe," and when you come across a film that's based on a true story, I think it strengthens it because it really happened.

While I knew that Dallas Buyers Club was based on a true story, I have watched other movies (without knowing the film was based on a true story) and then those lines at the end come - the epilogue - and that kind of hits me in the gut - in a good way. Very emotional.

I kind of get what you're saying here. But storytelling serves so many disparate purposes. Pure entertainment, broad-stroked exploration of the human condition, deep-tissue character studies, attempts to see "known" quantities from a new or unpredictable angle, keeping Will Farrell from having to get a real job... "Capturing an actual event/series of events" is just one of the possible aims, and not particularly superior to any other.

Plus movies tend to do a terrible job of capturing events authentically, because film is such an interpretive medium. Not to say the results aren't entertaining (some of the best movies are creatively told versions of true stories), just that accuracy and authenticity are not concepts that are especially suited to an art form that works in 120 minute segments, wherein every single technical decision or creative idea can produce an alteration to the "truth" of the story.

In the case of the film in question, even the character's rodeo work is a creative addition meant to serve as "a metaphor for his character’s struggle and ability to survive far longer than his doctors said he would—a lassoing of the bull.”

Add enough of these changes/omissions/additions, and I'm not sure to what degree the phrase "based on a true story" really connects it to a real world event. I mean, Braveheart is "based on a true story," but you don't get much more generous than when you say THAT.

Invited to the Argentine premiere of Llewyn Davis. I already watched it in Colombia and was kind of underwhelmed, but I think it's worth a second watch. Especially if it's for free.
