You know, I have no idea. But it's certainly possible with him, yeah.

I've really been fascinated by Townes Van Zandt's story and songs lately...

Big influence in my own songwriting right now...

Is there a specific thing I need to have experienced to 'get' PiL? Because while I see where they influenced The Pixies sound, that's about it. It's almost atonal at times, but maybe that's on purpose reading Wikipedia.
Their early work is often regarded as some of the most challenging and innovative music of the post-punk era.

Evidently, the video I linked above is from this performance. It's good getting into TvZ while reading Willie's autobiography... the two go well together and motivates me to write more. They also get me excited about Tx again... Ain't nothin' else gonna do THAT!

Their first two albums are rightly classics. Not sure if there's a way to get into this band, I think you just need to like droney music and despise conventional lifestyles.

Ah. I don't like droney music and I'm about as conventional as you can get.

Though I did like some of the stuff off their later albums, maybe I just need to keep trying.

A friend of mine is working with a certain singer-songwriter (who was pretty big 10 years ago). He told me that it's hilarious how the guy doesn't give a single fuck about his music, and thinks strictly in terms of "is this hooky enough to get on pop radio?". Dude actually threw out a song that he did like for being "too clever". I wonder how many musicians operate that way.

I feel like Guns n Roses has to be one of the coolest bands ever, such groove in the music. IDK even any bands that sounds like this. Some moments in their catalog are just so cool.
