I think people call it a middle aged song since most people are lucky (or unlucky depending on how you look at it) to not have to consider morality until they get a bit older--beyond the 'woe is me, I better kill myself' angsty version.

I guess I don't like this song precisely because I'm pretty fine with mortality. I actually wish it would happen much sooner to a lot of people.

It's a middle-aged song, I suppose, in the sense that it's not just a single person's brooding ("Immortality") but it's just as much about loved ones and families as it is about the singer. It's also obviously courting a style that is really palatable and easy-listening (not so much for many PJ diehards).

So you could have added a bit poking fun at me for taking 500 words to say what you did in 46?

i dont think you have to have a problem with your mortality to like the song, but if you do it might mean more to you. reguardless of what the song was about, i think its beautiful, but the words to hit me just like the end does

It's floating at or near 15 on each of the 3 rock formats. Total plays last week were just north of 2,000...it's gotten a little less than 8,000 in four weeks, versus Manners' 11,000 start. I think it'll be a middling, Life Wasted-sized single on those, but will be boosted by Triple A (a Triple A #1 has the play and audience size numbers equivalent to a #20 single at Active Rock).
Thank you.

Hmmm, that sounds a bit disappointing to me but I'm sure I'm overrating an almost 6-minute song about middle-aged anxiety.

I'm quite liking this new "bat signal" thing we have going re: the charts btw.
Heavy post warning:

I'm 31. I almost lost my life in my mid-20s due to a fuck up with my condition (a shunt malfunction). I lost the power of speech and had to be carried off by ambulance. I remember hearing the siren, before I fell asleep, and the next thing I know is waking up in recovery. The event eventually lead to my first wife divorcing me. I'm now married again, and to the one I plan to be with for the rest of my life. And yet, since my mid-20s, mortality has been a huge deal to me, and it's on my mind more and more. If I think too much, I can get over

whelmed.

So, it is not a middle-age song. Relax. This is a wonderful damn song, and I'm so glad that PJ wrote it now.
you're right age has nothing to do with it

Still liking this one team. I don't care if it's middle age rock, dad rock, pussy rock, douche bag rock, cock rock, ballad corn ball rock, or whatever, I like it.

Its okay. You're not alone. I'm shocked I enjoy this one as much as I do. Not the avenue I would've ever wanted the band to go down.

It's weird aint it? I wrote about this in the YM thread yesterday...YM is a song I should like, and Sirens is a song I shouldn't like. YM is the type of song I'd rather them explore more into. This is the road I would rather PJ go down; Sirens is not. Yet, I think (at this point) I like Sirens more. Crazy? Yes, and I have no explanation for it.

It is really strange. And, I have the same feelings about both songs.

My use of the term "middle-aged" was not meant as an insult, rather, more of a fact. The guy writing it is middle-aged and I picture him speaking to his wife and kids when he's writing it.

Everyone else's interpretation can obviously be as broad as necessary. The sirens come for us all, my friends.

I have a feeling YM will surpass Sirens though. Maybe Sirens just has more instant gratification for me? I can imagine this time next year that I change my mind, and put YM above Sirens in the always changing and never ending ranking system I have.

Well, I sliced his arms and legs off, and left him next to a river of fire to burn to death, but he managed to survive somehow.
