I listened to the Gillian Welch tracks you guys recommended -- I liked them all (might even order a CD!), though it feels more like folk to me than hardcore, dyed-in-the-wool bluegrass. Garcia/Grisman I'm familiar with -- I really enjoy "Shady Grove" in particular -- though I suppose the fact that it's something of an extension of another body of work that I already like predisposes me to it a bit. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I hate the genre -- there are fleeting elements of it in loads of music I adore, and many of my favorite artists have flirted with it admirably. It just seems like once you get beyond its extensions, down to those artists that really thrive off being associated with that genre, I struggle to find stuff to connect with. Maybe I've just been exposed to bad shit.

Sorry KD, I wasn't following the conversation. I briefly listened to some bluegrass and my entry was Steve Earle's The Mountain and then Tim OBrien Red On Blonde (Dylan covers). Not strictly hardcore bluegrass.

I've played Whisky Train by them many times. Cool little riff.

Me too, LMS -- all of her albums are about half-excellent, I don't think she's made a masterpiece yet, but the good stuff keeps me coming back (her weaker stuff is merely average, still perfectly listenable).

I've already been into everything Dev Hynes lately, and then this came on the other night after some intimacy and it really brought the feels.
