Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

The Master works on an impressionistic level in a way that none of his other films quite touch (though TWBB comes close at times). It's enjoyment comes less from story or plot and more from the evocation of past experiences and half-remembered dreams that somehow get dredged up while watching scenes unfold...

Like when Joaquin is photographing people in the department store? He's obviously a loser and he's being paid to take these photographs of all these nice, normal, happy couples...Until he starts a fight with one of them, and loses his job. That whole sequence just obliterates me every time. It somehow captures the feeling of 100 different experiences I've had without directly reflecting any one of them.

There's like 20 scenes in the film like that.

I agree that many scenes are amazing, but as a whole I’m not sure there’s a point

I like the motorcycle scene. Not Joaquin's part necessarily, but before thaat, when Hoffman is riding. He's just a dude loving life, making up shit as he goes along. A true Master.

Insightful. I guess I don’t relate to these characters in that way. They often just feel silly and confused to me.
