This might be too obvious, but if we had a President and conservative propaganda machine not downplaying the reality of the situation, we wouldn't be in as bad a shape as we are in.

The southeast leaders fear of crossing the President or their brainwashed constituents by telling them the truth (my entire family in NC watches Fox News or listens to Rush and Hannity on the radio) is going to end up being a horrible scenario for them and it didn't have to be.

I understand that China hid numbers and denied the international community access to crucial updates. I understand that those figures would have helped some people prepare.

I just don’t understand the logic that says the United States would be safer now if they’d told the truth.

Nobody believed China’s numbers. Nobody believed it was contained. By the end of January, South Korea’s central government had already started mass covid test production. January!

Joe Biden (or someone who works for him that is still lucid) published an op-ed on January 27th, warning that the coronavirus was an incoming threat we were unprepared for, and that it would get much worse before it got better. Six days before THAT, internet nobody McParadigm (who as far as I can tell is a dipshit with no access to any state intelligence apparatus?) started a thread on his favorite trash site called “Anybody want a Corona?” First sentence in the thread: “This thing kills us y/n?”

Meanwhile, on January 30th the president was saying “We think we have it very well under control.” On February 7th, he flattered Xi for his response to the virus. And in late March/early April, he was still questioning the need for ventilators and talking about getting people into attendance at sports games.

Remember, dime personally brought it home from his ill-advised trip to Singapore. He’s directly responsible for bringing it to Ireland.

weird how this morning I was flippantly saying "sucks for him" and now that it's actually serious I hope he gets better.

Yeah that's not good news for Boris.
US News & World Report wrote:Severely Ill in the ICU
If pneumonia gets bad enough, patients require intensive care. In the ICU, patients are closely monitored to make sure their condition doesn't deteriorate and that oxygen levels in their body don't drop dangerously low. Although patients may start off by receiving extra oxygen through a nasal tube, that might not be enough to get sufficient oxygen into their blood. Here's what patients with COVID-19 can experience in the ICU:

Ventilator support could be necessary. Ventilators are machines that supply oxygen to the lungs of patients with severe respiratory problems whose oxygen levels in the blood go below a certain point. To go on a ventilator, patients need to have a tube placed down their throat, or intubation. Ventilators can be life-saving. "A good portion of patients who are sick enough to be in our intensive care units are actually on ventilators at a much higher proportion than we usually see with our influenza patients," Martinello says.
ICU patients face an extended recovery. Coming off a ventilator is a gradual process as patients with COVID-19 progressively recover the ability to breathe on their own. "What we're seeing in patients who end up on ventilators is that they often stay on them for several weeks," Curtis says. "And then, coming off the ventilator, they're often going to be in the ICU for several days, and then back (on a regular hospital unit) for a few days to a week or so to regain their strength." It's likely that some patients will need to go into a rehabilitation or nursing facility to build their overall strength in the recovery phase, he says.

Two things to this...

1.) I think you are 100% correct in what you said. For the US, Trump's ignorance and the cascading failures inside of the CDC to develop the 3 segment test ruined our chances of stopping this early. Totally agree.

2.) The thing is, assuming China's numbers are true and excluding them, there have been 60,000+ reported deaths in areas that Trump is not president of. These are countries that rely on organizations like the WHO to help them with health policy like was done during SARS and MERS. China's corruption of the WHO and deception about the extent of their domestic outbreak is directly responsible for these deaths (no telling what the impact of Xi's call to Trump in January downplaying the outbreak had on Trump's thought process, but it probably wasn't good). It's so bad even Iran is publicly blaming China now:

https://en.radiofarda.com/a/iran-offici ... 32450.html

and of course, there's this:

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/brit ... -j7kb55g89

China intentionally deceived the world and bears responsibility for this plague and Trump is the worst President ever. These two things that are both true at the same time.

It's not just a political disagreement though. Boris Johnson, Trump, McConnell... Etc these people are con men scum, selling our society out from under us.

It's a serious question. I suppose if you're a Tory I can understand not wanting your figurehead to die. But if you think, as I do, that Boris Johnson is a cruel and stupid man whose blend of populist nationalism and austerity politics has been an unmitigated force for bad in the world, then no, you should not hope for his recovery so that he can continue to do bad things. If there's another way to understand this I'd be glad to entertain it, but my sense is that not cheering his death is a reflexive squeemishness rooted in a liberal humanist universalism that upper crust Boris 100% does not subscribe to. He was content less than a month ago to condemn hundreds of thousands of Britains to die for "herd immunity" and has led the charge to defund the NHS which has undoubtedly killed an untold number of (poor) people. Recover for what.

That’s a hyperbolic political statement, and yet I’m sure he would not wish you dead if you were sick. So who is cruel?

I’m not a Tory.

Mickey, you're not wrong, but I can't bring myself to wish for someone's death, even people who sorely deserve it. When Scalia died, it was more of a weight being lifted than feeling than celebratory.

Of course, McConnell put that weight right back on me and then some.

If I was a narcissistic psychopath hell bent on dismantling the social safety net in the name of greed then I think it would be fair to wish me dead.
