That album sounds really awful on CD. Is the vinyl mastering different?

It sounds way, way different, so much so that it struck me during the first song--I've only ever listened to it on MP3, I think. I remember it sounding pretty brickwalled and fuzzy, but the LP has lots of range. There are quiet parts to the tunes that I've never noticed before.theplatypus wrote:That album sounds really awful on CD. Is the vinyl mastering different?

I don't understand the point of shelling out money for spoken word on vinyl. Music on vinyl is one thing because you can argue you like the sound better.

yeah i never understood the point of comedy sets on vinyl. the whole format just fights against the idea of a live comedy performance, having to flip things mid-set and interrupt the flow

Any of you guys have experience with (or know anyone who has experience with) vnyl.org?

The general consensus is: stay away. I can add some links later.durdencommatyler wrote:Any of you guys have experience with (or know anyone who has experience with) vnyl.org?

No need. That's kinda what I figured. I did a little digging around myself. Just hadn't ever heard of them until today and I kinda like the concept.

They've changed the concept a few times. When they started up, they billed themselves as "Netflix for vinyl"--i.e., you'd get a couple of records per month, and you could return the ones you didn't like for others. They later found out this was actually illegal, so they changed their subscription plan without informing customers first. So, yeah, stay away.durdencommatyler wrote:Simple Torture wrote:The general consensus is: stay away. Left speaker has been cutting out lately. Checked all the connections. Old Dynaco piece of crap has probably about had it.

I was having trouble with one speaker, and it ended up being that one of the pins in the tone arm (whete the headshell connects) was stuck in a weird position. It's worth Googling every part of your system to see if that's a known issue.verb_to_trust wrote:Left speaker has been cutting out lately. Checked all the connections. Yeah I did some research and came up with a few things and that was one. I'm also going to switch channels on the speakers and see if the cut stays on the left.

Having a fancy set-up sounds like a pain in the ass.

It also seems like a complete crapshoot as to whether a run of pressings of any given record is just going to be flat-out defective. A bunch of people on the Hoffman forums were posting pictures of their "Skeleton Tree" vinyls with a bunch of weird white scuffs on them. That would drive me bonkers.

Yeah, I've heard Skeleton Tree is a mess. I'm waiting until Amazon gets them back in stock, because they have a very liberal return policy (free shipping both ways for replacements). If this happens at a record shop or another online retailer, you may be shit out of luck.Kevin Davis wrote:It also seems like a complete crapshoot as to whether a run of pressings of any given record is just going to be flat-out defective. I wish I had another stylus to swap in too but I don't, I could have had an awesome process of elimination themed Friday night.

Pretty much. And I'm not very handy (read: an idiot) so fixing whatever is wrong turns into a big task.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Having a fancy set-up sounds like a pain in the ass.
