I saw a couple of different interpretations of what the mother was doing. One said that she basically orchestrated the whole thing to teach her kid to grow up and move out of the house, but I don't think that fits. She's more of an overprotective, coddling mom trying to protect him I think.

Because she's Morgana, and she was trying to hurt/dishonor King Arthur or one of his knights. She didn't actually know Gawain would be the one to volunteer (she tells him to come back and tell her what he sees.)

When Gawain fucks up her plan, she has to come up with different ways to keep Gawain out of trouble.

huh, interesting. I wasn't fully sure about it, but I thought it was all her plan for her son to become "a great knight". Removing the protective belt was the final test for him.

I also got confused by the scene where he’s tied up and then the camera wraps around and he’s a corpse skeleton and then it wraps around again and then he’s alive. is that just a fun way of showing that he’s imagining what’s going to happen if he doesn’t break free?
