Or maybe the timing is right for her to cast her spell because she knows the kings son is not returning and so Gawain is next in line

I'd be curious to watch it again with the view that she didn't intend for her son to be the one who takes on the challenge. See if there's something that indicates a "oh shit, what did I do!"
I thought she gave him some words of encouragement. But maybe it was kind of "Welp, there's nothing I can do to stop it now, so I might as well make him a protective belt and tag along as a fox (also be that blindfolded old woman, possibly?) to try and help him".
The fox tries to discourage him from going to the Green Chapel, right? Why didn't his mom try to discourage him from going before he left?

It really seems like the Mom and the king were in cahoots from the beginning to get him on this quest. The king said he wanted greatness for him and the mom said do not waste this. They didn’t want him to be the next king while having no great adventures or virtues to speak of.

Keep reading about that movie, sounds like it deserves a thread of its own.

I think it was key to not only have an adventure, but one of honor and dignity.
I missed a lot of details by watching the first half a few weeks ago, then playing the first half in the background yesterday, and picking back up on the second half with a focused watch. I will definitely watch it again in the future.

The Northman was a bit of a letdown. It looked great and had some wonderful sequences, but the vengeance narrative itself fell a little flat. Surprisingly Skarsgard was very wooden and did little to engage me. At times I just kinda hoped he would would die of a heart attack or something.

Yeah it was a bit generic to me.
He looked like a giant Tim Robbins and that was distracting.
