I like what he brings to the overall recipe of The Office. But he's a shit, for sure. One of the most unlikable characters in the entire series, I think.

ed helms is a great performer, but i just think the writers didn't know what to do with the andy character

I think they found themselves painted into a corner when Steve left. The only character they had that could be morphed into a ghost of Michael Scott was Andy Bernard. And so that's what they did. Maybe if Robert California had wanted to commit to more than one season things could have been different.

I haven't watched the last couple seasons nearly as much as the first seven, but I remember really disliking Andy by the end of the series.

I know he's kind of a divisive dude but I always wished they'd gotten Ricky Gervais to take over Steve's slot at the end. I think it could've made a great bridge between the US and UK series, and the characters are different enough that it wouldn't have felt like a rehash.
