This almost sounds like a swipe at Rick Rubin. Rubin (with his techniques) has produced some timeless, classic albums.

Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois spent a year recording U2's Achtung Baby...that album is bloody masterpiece.
Albini is a poser. At the time it was "true"...now is just funny.
That Bush album actually sounds pretty good, though.

This set (fully assembled with cover art and all!) has constituted the bulk of my listening for the last three days. Nirvana's camp should just slap a sticker on this thing and release it, right down to the packaging. This is exactly the kind of catch-all roundup their catalog is missing, and the sound is great. The fact that it includes all the live versions of album cuts and alternate mixes alongside the rare songs makes it feel genuinely like an "alternate history," familiar material from a familiar career but weaving through slightly different loopholes. Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

Sorry, I just pulled the link down. Hit up Kevin, Brad or Spenno. They all have copies.

I'm sure this has been covered in this thread, but how many Albini mixes are on this set?
Heart-Shaped Box
All Apologies
I thought Pennyroyal Tea was one, but it's the Scott Litt mix. It's still pretty awesome.

As has been covered in here already, the majority of this set was mixed by Steve.
Aside from the two singles, all of the original album was Albini's work.

Nice quick article in RS by David Fricke re-visiting this 20 years after he wrote that 1993 cover story on them. Some startling revelations from Dave and Krist. Nothing incredible, but unnerving to read, nevertheless.

Audiophiles can get their hands on this reworking November 29th, when the modern mix is released as a 45 RPM, 180-gram limited edition double vinyl on Black Friday for November's Record Store Day. The record was mastered at Abbey Road Studios with alternative artwork specific to the release.

Just listening to the 11/25/90 off ramp show. I know this has nothing to do with in utero besides being the live premiere of dumb, but man is this show killer. When Jeff Holmes clears the venue out to get rid of the booze and then they come back and play all that extra stuff...wow.

All I want to say here is that Kurt had an AMAZING voice. Raspy as hell, untrained and amazingly expressive. I think, more than anything, is why Nirvana's music endures to this day.

This is also a pretty apt description of his songwriting and his relationship with music theory. He is a classic case of instinct preceding skill--he didn't necessarily have any formal training on how chords were supposed to go together, but he knew how songs were supposed to sound, so he was able to create and entire book of widely accessible songs using nothing but his own (very academically unsound) musical language. A class act.

I stumbled upon the isolated vocal track for "Smells Like..." the other day and was pretty blown away by his control while also maintaining reckless expression. How much "touching up", if any, went on during those sessions? Does anyone know?
