Yeah, every genre has terrible band names, but metal bands really run the negative, sinister, gross, etc. themes into the ground.

Septicflesh! Dead Congregation! Hatebreed!

Oh, come on. Septicflesh?! Considering your general taste in music, I trust most of these bands are quite good. It just seems like a lot of them used an internet name generator.

I guess you can find pretty much any name silly if you don't care for the band or the genre. I don't see it as less original or more stupid than a punk band calling themselves Sex Pistols or The Clash, or any silly rapper name. Of course some of it is goofy but if you end up liking the music you won't care about the band name, or you might grow to like it because of how it fits the themes and the sound of the music. Septicflesh as a name is a lie though, they should call themselves My Corny, Glossy Shit.

This sounds alarmingly close to something a metal hipster would say...

i mean... is it supposed to be gross? I guess it is. Sort of. It can be. Seems kinda minor though. Why didn't they just call themselves Infected Papar Cut? Or Sprained Wrists? or Plantar Fasciitis? Hell, Staph Infection would be better. Is it supposed to be ironic?

Its kinda vaguely zombie related I guess, as if zombies aren't fucking lame now.

Its no Cannibal Corpse or Dying Fetus. Its not even Goatwhore.

None of that would matter if the music was good.

Arguing about metal band names is kind of silly.

What, precisely, don't you like? Overproduced? Don't like the symphonic elements? Not br00tal enough?

Who cares? It's a better band name than Pearl Jam.

Overproduced. Cheesy symphonic elements. Sanitized. Goofy. Basically it make me feel like I'm listening to Eurovision contestants doing a parody of metal. I want my death metal to smell like death, not cologne.

Symphonic metal is not something I typically enjoy but I listened to a handful of tracks on youtube and for the most part it was pretty good. I'm not into the symphonic parts but they weren't really prominent enough to turn me off. Totally could do without most of them though imo. They'd be much better as a straight up death metal band.

Bizarre. I couldn't disagree more. I've heard other bands where the symphonic stuff felt really cheesy (probably because they were created using synths, not orchestra), but I think Septicflesh really earns it because Christos is such a talented composer (the orchestral music sounds great on its own without the metal). For me it comes together in a way that sounds truly, organically epic and heavy. I've never heard another band pull it off like they do. It also helps that I LOVE the vocals (I'm super picky with death metal vocals; it has to be powerful, belted from the lungs for me to like it. I hate weak, gravelly, throat-produced vocals.)

I think we just disagree on metal production in general, because I prefer that they sound clean and professionally produced. One of my biggest problems with getting into a lot of other metal bands is that I hate how lo-fi and shitty they sound. Unless it's something like Burzum where that poor quality is important to the sound/atmosphere/meaning of the music, it just takes me out of it. Really, I'm kind of a stickler for good production in general; I've heard lots of stuff from lots of genres that makes me think, "This would be awesome with better production."

I don't mind clean sounding metal per se. It still has to feel like something dark and sweaty but it doesn't have to be lo-fi to achieve that. But if it's meant to sound like it's coming from the guts of hell then a murky sound is going to be prefect. As for vocals I do prefer low, very guttural stuff.

Yeah, sounds like we are pretty opposite in our metal tastes. I HATE low, guttural vocals.

For what it's worth, I don't visualize Septicflesh's music (at least their last few albums) as "coming from the guts of hell" - I think it evokes imagery of ancient civilizations, with a heavy dose of human death. Basically, big, beautiful, ornate, epic, with a dark and brutal edge. Not ugly and sweaty at all. It's just a different aesthetic.
