I do think Springsteen does Springsteen better

Not that you'd really want either one marrying your daughter, or calling you daughter, or daughtering your betterman in the last exit, etc.

It's the slow songs. Of the Girl, Sleight Of Hand, and Parting Ways are the best studio recordings they've ever done, with the possible exception of Off He Goes.

When did Jeff say Binaural is his favorite album? I'd like to read that too.

In the most recent Deep magazine.

Off He Goes sounds amazing on the record. How did BoB get that so right and he's gotten so much wrong the past few years? Frustrating.

I've gotten the impression that he has overcompensated for changing industry norms, listening to people around here who know what they're talking about with this kind of stuff (I don't)

That's right, but what pisses me off is that Pearl Jam, being essentially an indie band at this point, doesn't have to conform to those shitty industry norms (more accurately, "trends").

Like Stip, I don't know too much about this. But, if what you say is true -- and I have no reason to doubt you -- the entire thing is incredibly frustrating.

Remember when Pearl Jam longed for freedom from their record contract so they could presumably not have to act like a mainstream rock band?

You'd think at their age and experience they'd not be concerned with trends

This has probably been beaten to a pulp, but how can you have a "mentor" like Neil Young and still get sucked into shitty mainstream hoopla

Really, though, I believe the problem is that Pearl Jam took to a lot of people who had already placed their artistic outliers, and were experiencing late career resurgences that didn't require them to invest as much in the daring of it all because there was no expectation for that to happen. They established to themselves that this was their peer group, and sort of aged themselves prematurely as a result.

Regardless of what you think of them or their music, U2 was infinitely more bold and daring in their second decade decade (and beyond) as a band than Pearl Jam has been.

I've been reading a couple of articles about hd digital music yesterday and of course Pono and with it Neil Young were mentioned. Some say he's a little detached from reality and is surrounded by people who's main occupation is to nod at him. Sometimes i get the feeling PJ is living surrounded by a similar cloud. Weather is their music, the 10C or other business decisions sometimes it seems they don't realise what the hell is going on or what certain things really look/sound/are like.

Does Pearl Jam have a business plan? Is it a 5 year? 10? 20?

This is rhetorical. I really don't think I give a rat's ass.

Twenty-five. The day before the 25th anniversary of their first show, it all makes sense...

Image

Image

"Fucking PEARL JAM is still together? And people care?"

Image

"Holy shit, is that a time machine? So like, you can travel through time? Have you ever done anything crazy like gone back and tried to have sex with yourself from when you were like twenty-five years younger? Wait...can I borrow this time machine? It's...it's totally for something else. I am definitely not going to use it to go make love to the 1990 version of myself. Definitely not. That's the last thing I would borrow your time machine for..."

Image

"Uhh. Sure thing, ma'am, just bring it back in one piece."

Image

"1990, here I come, bitches!"

Image

"Well hello, Stone. Recognize me?"

Image

"WHOA. SHUT UP AND LET'S DO THIS."

Image

"NOW THIS IS A PATTERN IN ALL MANKIND I CAN GET USED TO. YEAH!"

I bought one of those rainbow hats at Universal Studios when I was a kid. I would absolutely still wear it if I could find it.
