Off He Goes sounds amazing on the record. How did BoB get that so right and he's gotten so much wrong the past few years? Frustrating.

I've gotten the impression that he has overcompensated for changing industry norms, listening to people around here who know what they're talking about with this kind of stuff (I don't)

That's right, but what pisses me off is that Pearl Jam, being essentially an indie band at this point, doesn't have to conform to those shitty industry norms (more accurately, "trends").

Like Stip, I don't know too much about this. But, if what you say is true -- and I have no reason to doubt you -- the entire thing is incredibly frustrating.

Remember when Pearl Jam longed for freedom from their record contract so they could presumably not have to act like a mainstream rock band?

You'd think at their age and experience they'd not be concerned with trends

This has probably been beaten to a pulp, but how can you have a "mentor" like Neil Young and still get sucked into shitty mainstream hoopla

Really, though, I believe the problem is that Pearl Jam took to a lot of people who had already placed their artistic outliers, and were experiencing late career resurgences that didn't require them to invest as much in the daring of it all because there was no expectation for that to happen. They established to themselves that this was their peer group, and sort of aged themselves prematurely as a result.

I've been reading a couple of articles about hd digital music yesterday and of course Pono and with it Neil Young were mentioned. Some say he's a little detached from reality and is surrounded by people who's main occupation is to nod at him. Sometimes i get the feeling PJ is living surrounded by a similar cloud. Weather is their music, the 10C or other business decisions sometimes it seems they don't realise what the hell is going on or what certain things really look/sound/are like.

Does Pearl Jam have a business plan? Is it a 5 year? 10? 20?
